Despite fans calling for a female-fronted superhero film, Marvel Studios has yet to produce one. Sure, on the horizon is the Brie Larson-starring Captain Marvel, but surely there was an opportunity between Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor, and Ant-Man to slide in a film with a female lead?
Fans have often questioned why Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow has never been given her own film, mainly because she has proven increasingly popular across Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War.
With Avengers’ director Joss Whedon knocking on the door, revealing to the public he would direct the film if asked, surely now is better than ever?
Speaking to Variety, Johansson gave a minor update on whether a Black Widow film will ever be a reality, saying: “I think if the fans wanted it enough, then it would probably become a reality.”
She went on to say discussions are still ongoing with the superhero studio with regards the idea but will have to happen sooner rather than later: “If I did it, I’d have to do it while I still actually wanted to wear a skin-тιԍнт catsuit. I don’t know how much longer that’s going to be.”
Is Johansson hinting she may retire from the Black Widow role at some time in the near future? Whatever the case, there are still two more Avengers films on the way she will no doubt star in.
In the same interview, the actor spoke about her want for a solo film: “I would like for it to happen under the right circumstances. I think there’s a lot of opportunity to mine that story line. She’s got a really rich origins story.
“There’s a lot of places you can go — you can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program. There’s all kinds of stuff that you could do with it. You could really uncover the idenтιтy of who this person is, where she comes from and where she’s part of.”
Meanwhile, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has spoken about the upcoming Black Panther and Captain Marvel films, saying “Panther is not really an origin story, since we saw him already in Civil War,” while “Captain Marvel is certainly an origin. It’s an origin story from the start.”
