A player on The 1% Club branded herself an ‘idiot’ after being tripped up by an ‘easy’ question’.

Hosted by Lee Mack, the ITV show welcomes 100 contestants who all attempt to win a huge cash prize. The programme’s questions were put to the public, with the percentage who got it right determining the difficulty of each round.

Aptly, the final quiz is one that just 1 per cent of the public answered correctly.

However, a previous instalment saw one of the supposedly simpler questions, the 90% one, trip up some players.

It read: ‘Which of the following words contain the most vowels?’

The options were ‘vowel’, ‘consonant and letter.’

Lee quipped: ‘And if you don’t know what a vowel is here’s a little tip… perhaps spend more time reading and less time on Instagram.’

The correct answer was ‘consonant’ but the question proved to be too tricky for 25 players, who were all knocked out of the game.

Lee asked one of the contestants, called Amanda, who got the question wrong what answer she went for.

Amanda revealed that she selected ‘vowel’ and Lee asked: ‘What was your reasoning?’

She replied: ‘Because I’m an idiot.’

Amanda then added: ‘I overthought it.’

‘It’s easily done,’ Lee commented.

Another episode saw The 1 Percent Club knock out all of its players with a particularly tricky question, leaving the £97,000 prize pot unclaimed.

There were five players remaining at the time, all hopeful that they could be in with a share of the money.

Then host Lee hit them with the following question: ‘What new word links the capitalised words below?’

He then read this sentence: ‘My SON TED ate raw FOOD and got SICK, then went to BED with me by his SIDE.’

As is the case with every question on the show, the players had just 30 seconds to try and work it out.

Lee then asked the players their answers and it was soon clear that no consensus had been reached, with all five of them reaching different conclusions.

One player was actually left so stumped by the question that they couldn’t even attempt to answer it.

Other possible answers suggested included ‘new’ and ‘well’.

For those unfamiliar with its premise, the quiz show sees players answer an increasingly tricky series of logic-based questions until they have been whittled down to the top 1 percent

Lee then explained that the right answer was ‘sea’.

If you’re wondering why, it’s because the word sea can be added to the start of each capitalised word to create a new word – season, seated, seafood, seasick, seabed and seaside.

Lee was left gobsmacked that no one had managed to get the answer after another particularly difficult question knocked out 16 players in the second round.

The 1% Club airs on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
