Escape To The Country buyers stunned after finding trap door in middle of living room – as BBC host warns ‘don’t go in there!’

Escape To The Country buyers were left stunned after finding a trap door in the middle of a living room.

Sunday’s instalment of the popular BBC show saw presenter Steve Brown help Clare and Crispin, from South London, find their dream home in Cumbria.

With a budget of £800,000, the married couple wanted three bedrooms minimum and plenty of land with space for goats and dogs.

They also hoped to be close to a cafe or pub.

During one of the property tours, Steve showed Clare and Crispin around a £495,000 modern barn conversion.

‘There’s one other unusual addition, which I’m hoping they’ll appreciate,’ the host said.

They entered a reception room and Steve asked, ‘So how about this as a space?’

Clare joked, ‘Depends what’s down there,’ as she pointed to a door in the floor.

‘Don’t go into the trap door!’ Steve quipped.

He then revealed, ‘So what we’ve got down there is a cellar, do you want to be brave enough to have a look?’

Crispin stepped down into the cellar and had a look around while the other two waited in the reception room.

At the end of the episode the couple admitted ‘most of the houses’ matched a lot of their requirements.

They decided to go for a second viewing on one of the properties and put in an offer which was accepted.

In another episode of the BBC show, a buyer issued a nine-word takedown to host Alistair Appleton after she rejected every single property they presented.

Lizzie asked Alistair for help relocating from London, where she had lived for 20 years, to Suffolk, in a recently aired episode.

Her father had pᴀssed away 18 months before and since then, she had wanted to move closer to family.

Lizzie had a budget of £500,000 and was hoping to find a property with two bedrooms.

Her mother, Sue, who already lives in Suffolk, joined the marketing manager on the show to help.

Alistair presented the pair with four possible properties, but none of them managed to fully meet Lizzie’s expectations.

Though she seemed particularly taken by the character of the final abode, when Alistair asked, ‘Any red flags, anything worrying you?’

Lizzie replied: ‘I think it’s potentially the light, so might have to think about it, but that’s part of the property really, isn’t it.’

The trio sat down together at the end of the episode to discuss the situation and Alistair asked, ‘Did we hit the nail on the head with any of our properties?’

Lizzie curtly replied, ‘I don’t think you’ve quite hit the nail on the head.’

She went on, ‘I think the third one was a really interesting property and it might be worth us going back and having a look at the village a little bit more…

‘I think there has been a consistent theme with all three properties that the ground floor works slightly better than the second floor.’

Her mother commented: ‘I think you probably need a lot more space upstairs than we’ve seen.’

Lizzie added: ‘But I think what has been really useful, I think you’re helping me crystallise my thoughts.

‘And I’m wondering whether actually going forward, it’s about a small market town for me, or a slightly larger village and that’s where I think the thoughts are starting to crystallise.’

Escape To The Country airs on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.
