A numbers and letters riddle on The 1% Club left Lee Mack ‘in disbelief’ – but can you solve it?

A previous episode of ITV show saw host Lee welcome 100 contestants who all attempted to win a huge cash prize.

The programme’s questions were put to the public, with the percentage who got it right determining the difficulty of each round. Aptly, the final quiz is one that just 1 per cent of the public answered correctly.

However, the 50% question shocked Lee and read: ‘Which of the following words includes a number in it which is NOT the same as the number of letters in the word?’

The answer was ‘extension’, which was made of nine characters but featured the word ‘ten’.

It stumped two players who were knocked out of the game and others used their pᴀsses.

Lee was particularly surprised about the question and commented: ‘I can’t believe they got me to say horniness on TV.’

It comes as Saturday’s instalment of the quiz show saw the 80% question wipe out 19 players.

It read: ‘What common food below has had its letters rearranged into alphabetical order? ABDER.’

The answer was ‘bread’.

Lee was taken aback by how many people didn’t get it correct and exclaimed: ‘Good God. I mean sorry, unlucky those of you who are out. We lost 19 on that one!’

He added: ‘I’m surprised, I have to be honest that so many people went out on that. That doesn’t help but I’m only being honest.’

During the same episode, a record number of players were knocked out by a particularly tricky question.

The question read: ‘Which of these words can have two of its letters swapped over and still result in a valid word?’

There were three possible options – conversation, dialogue and chat.

The clock then did its usual 30 second countdown as viewers and players alike tried to work out the answer.

When the timer came to an end, there was a pause.

Lee said: ‘Now, you’ve just broken a record you lot, because, between you, you have just used 46 pᴀsses!’

He went on to reveal that the correct answer was conversation, as the letters v and s can be swapped around to spell conservation.

The 1% Club has quickly established itself as one of the most popular figures of Saturday night television.

First hitting screens in 2022, the show has an impressive IMBD rating of 7.6 out of 10.

However, to put its difficulty into context, only two players have won £99,000 and there has yet to be a £100,000 winner.

Addressing its popularity, Lee told The Sun: ‘Great contestants, loads of cash to win, and guaranteed ‘I can’t believe you couldn’t work that one out Dad!’ moments to cause family disputes – I love it.’

Lee added: ‘I like quizzes that are tough.

‘I watch University Challenge knowing that if I’m lucky I’ll get a couple of questions right, and I’m more than happy with that because when you get it right, you feel great.

‘That’s what I really like about The 1% Club.

‘Producers shared some questions with me and if I’d been able to get them all right, I probably wouldn’t have done the show.

‘But I quickly realised if someone gets these right, they’re a proper brainbox.’

The 1% Club airs Saturdays on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
