Ross Kemp is left shaken after he learns of a ‘dreadful’ relative who ‘threatened to behead his mum with a kitchen knife’ in the upcoming episode of Who Do You Think You Are?

The actor, 60, who is arguably best known for playing Grant Mitchell in EastEnders, is one of the famous faces appearing in the new current series of the BBC genealogy show.

According to The Mirror, in the next instalment of the programme, Ross finds out about the history of his great uncle Albert Chalmers, who grew up in a Portsmouth pub and later went into the navy.

However, after he was discharged things started to go downhill and received court charges for drunk and violent behaviour.

The publication reported that one even read that he ‘threatened to decapitate his own mother’.

During the episode, Ross says: ‘It was alleged he threatened to cut his mother’s head off, and everyone else in the house, at the same time chasing after her with a table knife.’

And his behaviour got him on the “blacklist” of the 1902 Licensing Act and barred from every pub.

‘One story in the family, which I think has been very conveniently forgotten, is about Pop’s brother, my great uncle Albert, who was a bad man,’ Ross says.

‘A blacklister.’

Albert was sent to a Inebriate Reformatory, but after three years ended up in a psychiatric hospital.

‘I feel very sorry for him. I look at the picture and think ‘there was a life there’,’ Ross says.

‘And he wasn’t remembered by anyone, even by his own brother. My great grandfather never mentioned him to his daughters and it was definitely not handed down to my mum and certainly wasn’t handed down to me.

‘Albert’s life was never really mentioned in the family history. This is not what I was expecting.

‘I thought they all lived in the pub and it was all slightly Disney.

‘The reality is my great uncle was an alcoholic with mental health issues and there is nothing romantic or sweet or sugar-coated about that.’

It comes after Andrew Garfield broke down in tears at the grave of his ancestors who were ‘deemed so valueless’ after harrowing a revelation last week.

Spider-man legend Andrew, who grew up between Los Angeles and London, was intrigued to find out more about his dad’s side of the family, who come from Poland.

During the episode, Andrew got very emotional when he visited a memorial grave site in remembrance of those who died at the Treblinka extermination camp near the village of Treblinka, Poland.

His Jewish great-grandfather Ludwig Garfinkel’s three sisters didn’t manage to escape and he placed three stones on a gravestone marked Kielce, which is where they were from.

Fighting back the tears, Andrew said: ‘This is a memorial stone for the Jews from Kielce that met their ultimate fate here in Treblinka, which my great-grandfather’s three sisters, we imagine, had to have been murdered.

‘Szajndia, Dworja, Basia. Their lives were deemed so valueless and the Nazis attempted to erase even the memory of them, even their names, even any record of them.

‘And they had succeeded in certain ways.

‘They were just normal girls, they were just normal women who just wanted a life, they wanted to live, to thrive, but this journey that we’ve been on has recovered my memory of them and my family’s memory of them and I’m grateful for that.

‘I wish I had known you better, I wish you peace.’

Last month the BBC confirmed the return of Who Do You Think You Are? with a Strictly star and soap legend in the mix.

The genealogy show, which follows famous faces as they find out about their family tree, hit our screens on the Beeb in 2004 and has had 177 episodes over 20 seasons.

The likes of Andrew Garfield, Diane Morgan, Mushal Husian, Ross Kemp, Aisling Bea, Will Young, Fred Siriex and Layton Williams explore their family history.

Who Do You Think You Are airs on Tuesday on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.
