Gwyneth Paltrow, 52, ditches ultra-strict Paleo diet after years of being ‘obsessed with eating very healthily’

Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed she’s ditching her ultra-strict Paleo diet after years of being ‘obsessed with eating healthily’ and restricting bread, cheese and pasta.

The actress turned wellness guru, 52, who founded her wellness company GOOP in 2008, admitted she’s ‘sick’ of the caveman diet.

In recent years, Gwyneth’s diet involves drinking coffee for breakfast, bone broth for lunch and vegetables for dinner.

The idea of the Paleo diet, also known as the Paleolithic or caveman diet, is to eliminate modern foods and eat what our ancestors would have.

It advocates eating meat, vegetables, nuts and limited fruit, and excluding grains, legumes, dairy, salt, refined sugar and processed oils.

Although its followers boast of benefits including weight loss, a smaller appeтιтe, and more energy, there has been little research into its effects.

But her love for the strict diet seems to be on the decline as she admitted she’s ‘started eating bread, cheese and pasta again’.

The Hollywood star turned to the Paleo diet a few years ago alongside her TV producer husband Brad Falchuk, 54.

Speaking on her Goop podcast, she said: ‘I went into hardcore macrobiotic for a certain time, that was an interesting chapter where I got obsessed with eating very very healthily.’

She added: ‘I really deepened my connection with food and the whole philosophy around macrobiotics which is essentially just how they eat in the mountains of Japan so very local and seasonal.

‘Lots of fish, vegetables, rice, no diary, no sugar etc. I think that period of time I might have got a little didactical about it.

‘I was just so amazed that we had this power in our hands that if we treated ourselves well and hydrated and ate whole foods that we could just feel so much better. I was sort of intoxicated by that idea and I still feel that way to this day.

‘Things have gotten a little more complicated with me and longer term with inflammation and stuff.

‘It’s the reason Brad and I became Paleo a few years ago now. Although I’m a little bit sick of it, if I’m honest.

‘I’m getting back into eating sourdough bread, cheese – there I said it. A little pasta after being strict with it for so long.

‘But again I think it’s a good template, eating foods that are as whole and fresh as possible. I don’t think there are any doctor or nutritionist that would refute that.’

And it appears she’s sticking to her word as Gwyneth recently shared snaps of fries, burgers and pizza on her social media.

Known for hawking Goop products like the infamous ‘This Smells Like My Vagina’ candle, the Los Angeles born businesswoman previously made headlines when she spoke about her restrictive diet habits.

Opening up about what she eats on the Art Of Being Well podcast in 2023, the Proof star revealed that she typically starts off her day with an intermittent fast.

After that, she added that she will ‘usually eat something about 12. And in the morning, I’ll have some things that won’t spike my blood sugar. So, I have coffee.’

Bone broth was an essential part of the Goop founder’s diet plan — according to Gwyneth, it was typically what she would make herself for lunch.

After spending an afternoon exercising after her filling bone broth lunch, the Glee star explained that she usually eats, ‘lots of vegetables [for dinner]. It’s really important for me to support my detox.’

The svelte star’s candid details about her daily diet plan drew the ire of nutritionists, doctors, and online commenters

However, the Country Strong star later addressed the backlash on her Instagram stories, explaining that she never intended to convey that her diet was right for anyone else.

Opening up about the infamous diet backlash, Gwyneth explained to her millions of Instagram followers: ‘This was a transparent look at a conversation between me and my doctor.’

It was an intermittent detox diet that worked for her in the wake of her experience recovering from long COVID.

‘This is not to say that I eat this way all day every day,’ she added.

What is the Paleo diet?

A Paleo diet is a dietary plan based on foods similar to what might have been eaten during the Paleolithic era, which dates from approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago.

The idea is to cut modern foods from the diet to return to the way our early hunter-gatherer ancestors ate.

People do it for a variety of reasons in the belief that diseases such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes are caused by our modern way of living.

The diet can reportedly have effects of weight loss, better blood pressure, and more manageable appeтιтe.

There are no long-term clinical studies about the benefits and potential risks of the diet.

You can eat:

Lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds — foods that in the past could be obtained by hunting and gathering.

You can’t eat:

Grains, such as wheat, oats and barley, legumes, such as beans, lentils, peanuts and peas, dairy products, potatoes, refined sugar or highly processed foods in general.
