George Clooney’s latest transformation for the stage is earning more buzz than his performance — and not in a good way.

The 63-year-old actor is drawing ridicule online after debuting a noticeably darker hair color during a recent CNN interview promoting his Broadway adaptation of Good Night, And Good Luck. 

The dyed look, reportedly done for his role as legendary newsman Edward R. Murrow, marks a sharp departure from the salt-and-pepper style fans have long ᴀssociated with the Hollywood icon.

Despite discussing serious topics — including his surprising suggestion to lead the Democratic Party — social media users were far more focused on his appearance.

‘First day at my new job dyeing George Clooney’s hair, how’d I do y’all?’ one fan joked alongside a screensH๏τ from the segment, sparking a flurry of commentary.

‘Very game show host-ey,’ one user wrote. ‘Yes I know it’s for a role, yes it still looks a little silly,’ added another.

Others took the mockery a step further. 

‘George Clooney using boxed hair dye is the biggest possible recession indicator,’ one person quipped. 

Another piled on: ‘The older he gets, the more he looks like John Goodman. Oh, the hair looks super natural. Barely noticeable at all…totally…’

‘George is not aging well,’ one critic bluntly stated, as another posted, ‘You got him looking casket ready!’ another joked. 

‘Walks into the salon “give me the Walter Matthau,”‘someone else added.

Clooney had previously joked that his drastic hair change might not go over well at home, admitting that his wife Amal and their six-year-old twins likely wouldn’t be thrilled with his new look. 

‘My wife is going to hate it because nothing makes you look older than when an older guy dyes his hair,’ George said during an interview with the New York Times in February. ‘My kids are going to just laugh at me nonstop.’ 

The Academy Award-winner and the British-Lebanese lawyer have been married since 2014.

Although Clooney’s freshly dyed hair may be tied to his role in Good Night, And Good Luck, it’s arriving at a time when several Hollywood A-listers appear to be embracing darker locks amid what some are calling a ‘midlife crisis’ trend. 

Leonardo DiCaprio recently debuted deeper brown hair during awards season, with an even glossier update spotted earlier this week at CinemaCon, where he promoted his upcoming Paul Thomas Anderson film One Battle After Another. 

Ben Affleck has also been seen sporting a noticeably darker ‘do in recent months, following his high-profile split from Jennifer Lopez in 2024. 

In Clooney’s 2005 film Good Night,and Good Luck, David Strathairn had played the lead role, while Clooney took a supporting role as CBS President Fred Friendly, in addition to working behind the camera.

The movie, which was sH๏τ in black-and-white, focused on Murrow’s reports on Senator Joseph McCarthy’s unfounded claims of communist infiltration in the US government. 

This leads to a fiery confrontation between the two men on Murrow’s CBS broadcast ahead of the senator’s humiliation at the Army–McCarthy hearings and subsequent censure from the Senate. 

George would continue to experiment with beard lengths and cuts over the years – including a risky ‘toothbrush moustache’ in 2008 and a 10-day scruff as seen above, when he attended the New York Film Critic’s Circle Awards in 2010

And it was a far cry from the mullet he sported when George was cast as Sєxy handyman George Burnett in the American sitcom The Facts of Life in 1985 

George rocked shoulder-length locks from the 80s when the actor was just finding fame in the industry 

The all-star cast also included Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Daniels, Patricia Clarkson, Frank Langella and Twin Peaks star Ray Wise.

Clooney’s film was a hit at the box office, grossing $54.6 million against a $7 million budget, and it earned six Oscar nominations, though it went home empty-handed.

In addition to taking over the lead role in Good Night, And Good Luck as his Broadway debut, Clooney has a high-profile film in the works.

He’s set to star in the ensemble feature dramedy Jay Kelly, marking his first appearance in a film directed by Barbie co-writer Noah Baumbach.
