‘So we knew this story was going to be told beyond that day.’

Megan told how she had an ‘incredible celebrant’ at her wedding who was a really old family friend.

She continued: ‘She does funerals, mostly. This was her first wedding and she told me afterwards that she has never cried at any ceremony she has done for or since. But she cried on my wedding day.

‘It got all of us. Looking out at the audience everyone was weeping.’

When asked about jealousy when it comes to their relationship, the activist clarified: ‘It’s a very open relationship.

‘I know I’m [dressed in] green right now but I don’t often get jealous. I love going to the river and seeing lots of people enjoy being by the river.

‘I’ve been on tour recently and I’ve been swimming in a lot of other rivers. And I don’t think that they’re jealous either.’

Megan uses her marriage as a crusade to combat water pollution and elevate public consciousness about this critical issue.

She then asked Dermot about his relationship, as he previously mentioned he had one with the sea. He quipped: 'I'm more of a salt guy but I respect the rivers. I'm married but I was definitely cheating on my wife with Hampstead ponds'

‘We’ve got a fully privatized water system in the UK, one of the most expensive ones as well and the water is still shoddy.

‘50% of hospital beds in the world right now are taken up by somebody suffering from an illness related to water contamination.

‘It causes more deaths every year than all violence, including wars. Water is an essential part of life.

‘I think just as it’s a human right to have access to drinking water, it’s a human right to have water that you can also be in to improve your mental and physical wellbeing.’

‘To be fair she does the same,’ he added as Alison and Megan were in fits of laughter.

Alison then asked the writer: ‘What is the message you are trying to get across to people out there who are watching today?’

Megan responded: ‘So I want to say, that there is a lot to be scared about in the world right now, practically with water pollution.

‘This campaign, there’s a lot to be angry about, because our bills are just going up and up, they given allowance for water companies to raise the bills by 30% every year.

‘So there’s a lot to be angry about and scared. But what we wanted to do with the wedding was to focus on love and joy, and union. Also the strength of bringing people together through those joyful moments.

‘We don’t have many ceremony’s left in our human western world right now, but we still have weddings.  Everyone loves a wedding.

‘We wanted to give out a message of hope and empowerment.  Coming out of the water you feel stronger.

‘I didn’t think I’d be sat on morning telly in a wedding dress but swimming in the river has given me this voice.

‘I don’t think I’m the first person to fall in love with a river and I don’t think I’ll be the last. I really hope the rivers will be alive and well in the future,’ she added.
