Blockbuster spy thriller with ‘one of the highest TV budgets ever’ dealt brutal blow as spin-off series cancelled by streamer

A blockbuster spy series with ‘one of the biggest TV budgets ever’ has been dealt a brutal blow as a spin-off series is cancelled by a streamer.

Citadel, first released on Amazon Prime Video in 2023, is a spy action series starring Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra, Stanley Tucci and Leo Woodall.

Originally, the show was going to see two spin-offs called Honey Bunny, set in India, and Diana, based in Italy, open up the storyline.

Both have seen just one season each so far, released last year.

However, it has now been reported that they will instead be weaved into the second season of Citadel.

Bosses have promised that the merge will bring the ‘most exhilarating’ instalment yet.

‘Having successfully traversed India and Italy, storylines from both Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana will be woven into the upcoming second season of the mothership series Citadel,’ Vernon Sanders, the head of Amazon MGM Studios’ television division, said.

‘While these successful and widely enjoyed international chapters will not continue as individual series, Season 2 of Citadel will be our most exhilarating yet.’

The second season of Citadel is set to hit screens next year.

Vernon added: ‘With high-stakes storytelling, new additions to our amazing cast and bold, cinematic ambition, the new season will deepen the emotional journeys of Nadia, Mason and Orlick against the relentless force that is Manticore.’

The first season of Citadel reportedly cost $300 million, becoming the second most expensive show ever produced in Hollywood history.

When the next season initially was announced, Amazon and MGM Studios boss Jennifer Salke praised the show as a ‘global phenomenon’.

‘Citadel is a truly global phenomenon,’ she proclaimed.

‘Our goal was always to create a new franchise rooted in original IP that would grow Prime Video’s international audience.

‘This show has drawn an outsize number of new international customers to Prime Video.

‘Its mᴀssive worldwide debut audience is a testament to Joe and Anthony Russo’s remarkable vision, the incredible talents of Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Lesley Manville and Stanley Tucci, and the tireless work of the creative teams, cast, and crew.’

Citadel is available to stream on Prime Video now.
