Liv Tyler and her younger sister Mia revealed they didn’t know they were siblings the first time they met.

The Lord of the Rings star, 47, and the model, 46, recalled the moment they saw each other on a new episode of the Sibling Revelry podcast with Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson.

The half-siblings, daughters of Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, 77, grew up separately until their mothers, Bebe Buell and Cyrinda Foxe, brought them to the same Aerosmith concert at ages eight and nine. 

Liv recalled the unusual moment, ‘I just remember standing there watching them play, looking and seeing this girl who looked exactly like me,’ adding, ‘I was literally like looking in the mirror seeing double.’

Liv said that her mother then started crying, as she asked her ‘is Steven my dad?’ 

Mia shared, ‘I remember there were no kids backstage. So we played hard that night. And we were at this VIP area, outside of the green rooms, and we were just like, you know, doing our eight and nine-year-old thing, and this fan lady came up and she was like “oh my god, you girls are so cute. Are you guys sisters?”‘

Liv detailed her complex childhood, explaining she was partly raised by her grandparents in Maine during a difficult period in her father’s sobriety. 

Consequently, she believed rocker Todd Rundgren was her father, as he was a father figure and signed her 1977 birth certificate. 

Liv revealed she learned about her parentage and her sister Mia in quick succession.

‘That particular night that she’s [Mia] talking about, Guns n’ Roses were opening for Aerosmith. It was the beginning of their song ‘Welcome to the Jungle.’ We had driven to the gig at a place called Great Woods.’

Liv then got emotional: ‘We got tickets and we went to the audience and we were standing, and Guns n’ Roses was playing and I was so excited because I just like loved Guns n’ Roses. And on the side of the stage was this one girl standing there.’ 

Mia said, ‘Axl [Rose] used to dedicate “Sweet Child o Mine” to me like every tour, and he’d like bring me out on stage and be like “this is again to you.”‘

Liv then remembered that both she and Mia ‘had the same outfit on.’

‘We had both had perms, like spiral perms, pink frosty lipstick. We were both wearing a Aerosmith concert t-shirt with black leggings and Reebok high top sneakers.’

‘I looked and I was like, wait, that’s me. It was really weird.’

Her mom then told her the truth.  

‘I looked at my mom, and she just started crying. My mom was bawling, and I was like, “is Steven my dad?” and she just burst. She took me to a bench and we sat on at an outdoor amphitheater, and she told me the whole story in the most sincere, beautiful way.’

After she came home from the concert, Liv recalled coming to terms with the news.

‘It was layers. The first wave was shock. After that concert, we went home and my mom had a chaise lounge in front of a window. I remember sitting there for what felt like three days, but it was probably three hours.’

She then came ‘to this conclusion’ of ‘wow, I have two dads and all this love.’

‘I just was really excited about it because they’re all so different and so lovely.’

While Liv built relationships with her biological father and half-sister, she also recognized the emotional impact this revelation had on Todd, who was her father figure.

‘I think it’s probably still very hard and painful and I don’t speak to him enough. I love him. I have brothers from him and I had a whole family with them,’ Liv said of Rundgren, whom her mother Bebe dated when Liv was born.

Liv has since built close bonds with her biological father and half-sister. Steven went on to have another two children, Chelsea, and her brother Taj, with his second wife Teresa Barrick; Mia and Liv seen with sister Chelsea

‘I’m so grateful to Todd for choosing to be a father figure to me,’ Liv previously tole The Guardian.

‘It’s a big thing for a man to say, “I know this kid might not be mine, but I still want to be her father.” Although he and my mom weren’t together, he was always a very stable, loving force in my life.’

Buell became unexpectedly pregnant from a brief relationship with Tyler in 1976. 

Steven went on to marry Mia’s mom Cyrinda in 1978. They divorced in 1987. 

Aside from Liv and Mia, Steven went on to have another two children, Chelsea, and her brother Taj, with his second wife Teresa Barrick.
