Only a week after the explosive series three finale sent shockwaves across social media, fans of The White Lotus are already clamouring for details about the upcoming fourth season.  

The hit HBO show was already renewed for another season in January, before the third had even premiered, but so far nothing has been confirmed about where it will be set, who will be cast and what it will be about.

However, fans have already begun theorising what possible ideas creator Mike White has up his sleeve, with one eagle-eyed viewer convinced they’ve found a hidden hint in a previous episode.

They took to Reddit to explain their theory, after noticing a telling detail in episode four of the series three, when Natasha Rothwell’s Belinda Lindsey begins researching Greg Hunt, played by Jon Gries.

As she investigates the death of Jennifer Coolidge’s character Tanya McQuoid, a Google result shows a news story from December 2024, teasing a potential TV project about the late millionaire.

The opening of the article reads: ‘Update: Tanya McQuoid project in early development. The life and mysterious deaths of Tanya McQuoid has found new life. The rights have been purchased by a private producing company and even though the investigation is still ongoing, Hollywood…’

The fan explained that they believe this could be a deliberate hint from Mike to the plot of season four, suggesting it would revolve around the production company filming the project about Tanya on another White Lotus resort.

They said: ‘Possible hint at season 4? When Belinda was researching Tanya and Greg in Episode 4 of Season 3, there’s a headline that a film/TV project is in the works that’s based on the life and mysterious death of Tanya.

‘Since all the seasons so far have Tanya as a general connection, albeit small or large, maybe one of the story lines for Season 4 is that a production company is filming her story at a White Lotus resort.

‘And even though her death occured in Sicily, the new season would obviously be somewhere different. They could just explain it away as they’re filming it in a different location for tax reasons, whether it’s somewhere warm or cold. Or would this be too Meta for the show at this point?’

Fans were quick to jump on the theory and excitedly began to pose suggestions for how their favourite stars from previous seasons could make a reappearance.

They wrote: ‘You may be on to something.’; ‘Check the dates on each headline as well. All are 2022 except for the circled one which is 2024’; ‘Amazing….the investigations going on!! Love it’.

‘I’d love a Jennifer Coolidge back story!’; ‘A documentary about her life as a plot would be hilarious and it’s a way to bring Tanya back. Maybe video of her in younger years. And besides she did take out an entire crime syndicate by accident but it also made her a Super- ᴀssᴀssin-Super- hero.’

‘On the official podcast, Mike White talked about his interest in the art world. I don’t remember if he mentioned the Venice or Cannes film festivals outright but I could see the Tanya biopic being premiered there. Would be fun to see the dynamics of art v commerce playing out with cast, crew, publicists, etc all staying at the local White Lotus.

‘Satirizing that world – especially given Mike’s own experience in the tornado of awards season with the show- would be hilarious. It would be a nice change up up from pure vacation vibes to awards/ festival circuit where people are there for work. He has included characters a part of this world, like Dominic DeGrᴀsso and most recently Jaclyn.’

Some suggested that Jennifer could return as an actress who is playing the part of Tanya, with many plumping for Pamela Anderson to get the role, while others begged for an ‘all-stars season’ with Michael Imperioli and Michelle Monaghan’s characters also coming back.

They wrote: ‘I vote for a meta spinoff series with Jennifer Coolidge playing herself as an actress playing Tanya is a lifetime movie adaptation of her life’; ‘Jennifer could come back playing herself’.

‘I vote Pam Anderson plays an actress researching playing Tanya’; ‘Dominic deGrᴀsso could be attached as a producer!’; ‘And Jaclyn could be a cast member as well’.

‘…what if we have Jennifer Coolidge again? It would be hilarious to see Jennifer Coolidge playing an actress that is supposed to look like Tanya, that’ll be the joke: “you look just like her!”.’

However, others declared that the idea would fit better as a spin-off, and may be to ‘meta’ to fit the style of The White Lotus.

They said: ‘Not season 4, but a spinoff. It’s been in discussion for a while now about doing a prequel type spinoff series about Tanya’s life and how she came to be rich, what happened with her husband, etc.’; 

‘I don’t think that’s Mike White’s style but it’s not a terrible idea as the premise to one of the storylines. Maybe a producer and a location scout are visiting. Could even bring back Imperioli, but that’s starting to sound too basic and again not the White way.’;

‘Too meta. Could be a half interesting spin off but not the white lotus. I’d love season 4 to be in Africa in a safari resort or a ski resort in the alps’.

HBO CEO Casey Bloys revealed that Mike already pitched him his concept for a fourth instalment while they were shooting series three in Thailand.

While the creator has previously teased that he would ‘love’ to do an all-star edition of the show.

Patrick Schwarzenegger, who starred as Saxon in the latest season, recently revealed that Mike has suggested the idea of bringing ‘all the douchiest guys together’ from past seasons.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter this month about the possibility of an all-star season, Mike said: ‘ᴀssuming this keeps going and people like it and HBO likes it, it would be cool’.

But he pointed out how tricky it could be from a logistical standpoint, saying: ‘Because all of these people end up becoming huge, huge stars. A lot of these kids that are easy to get are suddenly not so easy to get … but hopefully they’d come back.’ 

While HBO executive Francesca Orsi added: ‘I don’t think [an all-star season] will be season four, but that’s still on the horizon. It’s still in discussion but it’s too early.’

Meanwhile, Mike has also dropped several hints towards the setting for the show’s highly anticipated fourth season.

Season one was set in Hawaii, series two located in Italy, while the third was filmed in Thailand.

However, last week Mike teased that the location for season four might move away from the water.

He told ᴅᴇᴀᴅline: ‘For the fourth season, I want to get a little bit out of the crashing waves of rocks vernacular but there’s always more room for more murders at the White Lotus H๏τels’.

But earlier this month, the Mail on Sunday reported that producers are looking at Four Seasons H๏τels in Africa and Australia – with Marrakech in Morocco as the front-runner.

A source at broadcaster HBO in the US who was in a meeting with Mike recently said: ‘Mike wants to do a series of White Lotus on every continent. 

‘He’s done Hawaii and Italy and now Thailand. He hates snow, so the likelihood is Africa or Australia. No one thinks it will be Antarctica.

‘Season four has already been commissioned and Africa is the favourite. It has everything White Lotus fans expect. Heat, exotic locations and dramatic backdrops.

‘Marrakech offers heat and intrigue. Nothing has been decided, but Africa is the way Mike is leaning.’

The White Lotus production crew signed a reported £25 million deal in 2021 to film exclusively in Four Seasons resorts.

And the MoS has been told the Four Seasons in Marrakech is one of the H๏τels being ‘seriously’ looked at, while Mike is also looking at £1,000-a-night glamping at the Four Seasons in the Serengeti national park in Tanzania.

The HBO source said: ‘Mike loves the idea of going to Africa. He was talking about Egypt and a safari. There are several possible locations under consideration.’

Despite suggestions the show could be filmed in Mexico, but the HBO source said: ‘Mike did Hawaii. I’d be surprised if he goes back to the Americas.’

While fans who have been begging for a season set in a ski resort had their hopes dashed, as cast members have warned that Mike hates the cold.

Producer David Bernad told The Hollywood Reporter: ‘I feel confident we will never do a season in the cold. Mike is not for it. He is a California guy. He is not built for the cold. Never say never, but I would be surprised.’
