BBC film dubbed ‘the most disturbing ever made’ with perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score rebooted by Adolescence producers – warning ‘a whole new generation will get nightmares’

A BBC film dubbed ‘the most disturbing ever made’ is set to be rebooted by Adolescence producers.

Threads, based in South Yorkshire, first aired back in 1984 and delves into a harrowing story line of the area after a nuclear war.

Exploring a post-apocalyptic Sheffield city, the film follows a young couple, Ruth Beckett (Karen Meagher) and Jimmy Kemp (Reece Dinsdale) as they deal with the increasing political tensions and an unplanned pregnancy.

The drama boasts a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and has hundreds of rave reviews.

Now, the producers of recent hit Adolescence are reportedly set to develop a television series based on Threads.

Warp Films were behind the Netflix series and have confirmed the remake, describing Threads as ‘unflinchingly honest’.

CEO Mark Hervert told Radio Times: ‘Threads was, and remains, an unflinchingly honest drama that imagines the devastating effects of nuclear conflict on ordinary people.

‘This story aligns perfectly with our ethos of telling powerful, grounded narratives that deeply connect with audiences.

‘Reimagining this classic film as a TV drama gives us a unique opportunity to explore its modern relevance.’

Warp chief creative officer and executive producer Emily Feller added how the reboot would allow them to bring ‘fresh interpretations in light of today’s world’.

The acclaimed film won four BAFTAs in 1985 including Best Single Drama, Best Design, Best Film Cameraman, and Best Film Editor.

Threads has received many positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and one fan wrote: ‘Realistic and horrifying. This is a cautionary tale that many should be more aware of. The calm narrator’s voice makes it all that more chilling.’

Another warned: ‘One of the most disturbing and effecting films about nuclear war I have ever seen. Not for the faint of heart!’

While a third penned: ‘A frightening nuclear apocalypse story that can really only be endured once in a lifetime, Threads has the disturbing power to haunt the deepest corners of the mind like a dark scar on the human spirit.’

Someone else said: ‘I was 13 when this film came out and it literally changed my subsequent view of the world.

‘It was ahead of its time, but the really scary thing is now that even though it’s a brutal, grim and traumatising film, what we now know about the likely effects of a nuke war and it’s aftermath make this look tame.

‘A must watch, especially for those who grew up out with the Cold War.’

Another added: ‘Being from Yorkshire, I recognise most of these places in the film (although some don’t exist anymore, but not because they’ve been nuked!).

‘Harrowing depiction of nuclear war and the fallout (no pun intended) of it. Excellent film, well acted.’

While one viewer said: ‘Devastating, violent and bleak. Threads is a true horror film that puts the viewer on edge.’

The series – based on the hit video game franchise that was first released back in 1997 – debuted on Prime Video last year, with many fans devouring all eight episodes.

The show has became a hit with critics, with a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it seems to be a bit hit with fans as well.

One fan – X user @theLurfinator – gave the show, ’10/10,’ adding it is the, ‘best Video Game adaptation I ever saw.’

The fan added that the series is, ‘The Jedi Survivor of TV shows,’ referring to the popular Star Wars video game.
