Antiques Roadshow guest stunned into silence as expert reveals eye-watering value of her paintings – while BBC crowd gasp in awe

An Antiques Roadshow guest was stunned into silence after an expert revealed the eye-watering value of her paintings during Sunday’s instalment of the BBC soap.

The episode, which originally aired in 2023, saw many antique owners arrive at Ebrington Square in Derry to find out how much their ornaments were worth.

Picture specialist Frances Christie confessed that she was ‘really excited’ when she realised that the show guest had brought in Norah McGuinness pieces for her to look at.

The guest confessed that she bought them just because she liked the look of them and knew Norah’s sister ‘very well’.

Frances said: ‘I love that you managed to get your hands on two, because Norah, I mean she was a pretty pioneering artist for her time. She was obviously born around here, but spent most of her life in and around Dublin.

‘She went to art school in Dublin, then London, then Paris.

‘They’re both oil on canvas. And when you stand back and you see the bold combinations of colours that she’s used in them. Over here, behind the birds, this sort of bright green, with red flashing across the composition.

‘And then over to the seagull in this painting, that combination of purple with blue, and then this lovely ochre, sand colour.’

Frances was keen to know if the guest remembered how much she paid for them and how many years ago.

The woman said: ‘About £120 for that one, and the price is on the back of that…’

Frances looked on the back of the painting and explained that it said £600 on the back of the frame.

She continued: ‘So today at auction, I’d put a value of £8,000 to £12,000 on this one.’

The guest was left lost for words and simply said: ‘Wow!’

Frances added: ‘And on this one, I would say £6,000 to £8,000.

‘So not bad for something that you spotted a while ago!’

It comes after another Antiques Roadshow guest gasped when she learned the eye-watering value of her ‘obsessive’ makeup compact collection.

A recent episode of the BBC show revisited a woman who had previously brought some of her collection of art deco powder compacts to be evaluated back in 2013.

The more recent instalment, which first aired in October 2023, saw the guest return and share that she had expanded her collection.

Expert Ronnie Archer-Morgan asked her: ‘Could it be said, that you’re an obsessive collector by any chance?’

The woman joked, ‘No I don’t think it’s obvious,’ and went on to reveal that she had ‘probably over a thousand’ compacts.

She explained how her collection started and went on: ‘The story is we were married in 1973, we had no furniture, I went to an auction, bought a cardboard box full of things and one of them was a deco powder tin. I fell in love with that and this is the result.’

‘These are my babies, they’re quite an ᴀssortment,’ she added.

The expert looked at some of the compacts the guest brought in and began to evaluate them.

‘These ones here… they’re all about 1910,’ Ronnie said gesturing to some of the items. ‘They’re Edwardian.’

He added: ‘A lady would go out for her evening dinner and she was on show. Everybody would be looking. This [one of the compacts] would go on her finger. That is a thing of beauty.’

She had a range of mirrors ranging from 1910 to the 1950s, all in different styles.

‘We’ve got to tot the values of these up, it’s quite difficult. But I know that would be £800 or £900. This one would be £500, £600, £700, and so would this one. This would be £800 or £900, this beautiful little duo,’ Ronnie explained.

He then revealed, ‘We’re talking, on the table here, £5,000.’

The guest looked visibly shocked and gasped, ‘Oh my God’.

Ronnie added: ‘It’s been a delight looking at these. I would love more time to go through them, study them and enjoy them and love them like you.’

Antiques Roadshow airs Sundays on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.
