Antiques Roadshow guest roars ‘never!’ as she learns VERY lucky reason her grandfather’s lantern is worth a fortune – and BBC crowd bursts into applause

A guest on Antiques Roadshow roared ‘never!’ when she learned the lucky reason her grandfather’s lantern is worth a fortune – and the crowd burst into applause.

An episode of the popular BBC show visited Floors Castle, Scotland and saw members of the public bring their collectables and heirlooms.

Expert Lars Tharp was presented with an impressive Chinese lantern by a guest, which used to belong to her grandfather, who was a medical missionary in China.

‘It’s a beautiful thing,’ Lars remarked. ‘You’re obviously fond of it, since you use it.’

The guest explained how it was lit every Christmas and became part of the festivities for the family.

Lars commented: ‘Incredibly difficult to make something like this, it’s a really skillful thing, each of the facets is pierced with a different type of trellis.

‘Here you have a sort of honeycomb trellis, and in the centre there’s a reserve with a little lotus flower.’

The guest described how the lantern lit up the room with the trellis patterns shining through.

Lars added: ‘Exquisite detail, the flowers repeated on the foot. So often these lanterns have lost the foot.’

Though she didn’t have the ‘companion’ lantern, Lars was still able to give an impressive evaluation.

‘This one was made sometime between the late 18th century and I think the mid-19th century. And although it is very much to European taste, I think it would also appeal to Chinese taste,’ he said.

‘I think to replace one of these, if you wanted to go out and buy another one, I think you’re looking at somewhere between ten and £15,000,’ Lars revealed.

The guest was taken aback by the value and gasped, ‘Never! Really! I thought it was about £500.’

Lars explained that the reasoning behind the impressive worth was because the market had ‘gone absolutely through the roof and it’s going to appeal to the Chinese and it’s going to appeal to the Europeans’.

‘Thank you very much indeed,’ the guest said as the surrounding crowd applauded.

Another instalment of Antiques Roadshow saw an expert warn a guest ‘brace yourself’ as he revealed the eye-watering value of a diamond she didn’t think was real.

In an episode that first aired back in 1998 and was recently repeated on BBC One, a woman brought along a brooch for Geoffrey Munn to value in Hull.

The accessory was a family heirloom that originally belonged to the guest’s great-grandmother.

When Geoffrey was presented with the item, he said: ‘Wow. Say what a marvelous brooch, my goodness me. Is it a family one?’

The woman responded: ‘Yes, it came from my great-grandmother, to my nana, to my mum and then it’s been pᴀssed down.’

Though the exact age was not known, Geoffrey confirmed it was from the 20th Century and had a ‘very art deco design’.

Despite the brooch having some damage to it, the expert went on to give his valuation and said: ‘And you know the direction to which this all this is leading, to don’t you?

‘That this is a really, substantially good, valuable object. If there’s a chance at putting a name to a maker, then that would add to it even more.

‘But you have to brace yourself, strap yourself into the seat because we’ve got a really really good one here and if you went into a West End shop to buy such an object again, I think it’s possible that they would ask you £12,000 for it.’

Antiques Roadshow airs Sundays on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.
