Iconic detective series revived by BBC after 17 years off screen with Sherlock writer at the helm – and fans are already ecstatic

Iconic detective series The Inspector Lynley Mysteries has been revived by the BBC after 17 years off screen with the writer of Sherlock at the helm – and fans are already ecstatic about it. 

The crime drama series, created by Elizabeth George, was on our screens on BBC One between 2001 and 2008.

Over those seven years there were 24 episodes over six seasons. 

Now fans will be happy to know that the popular series will be back soon as a limited four-part series.  

Actor Nathaniel Parker played Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, while Sharon Small took on the role of Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers 24 years ago.

But now actor Leo Suter and Sofa Barclay will lead as the protagonists of the show.

But now actor Leo Suter and Sofa Barclay will take on the protagonists on the show

They will be joined by the likes of Daniel Mays as DCI Brian Niles and Niamh Walsh as Helen Clyde.

Michael Workeye will take on the role of Tony Bekele and Joshua Sher will play  Simon St. James.  

The programme’s press release teased: ‘With seemingly nothing in common and against all odds, the mismatched duo of Lynley and Havers become a formidable team, bonded by their desire to see justice done.’ 

Susan Elizabeth George, who wrote the novels, said: ‘I’m thrilled to see Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers come to television again, especially through the participation of the BBC and Britbox and the production expertise of Playground.

‘Watching my characters brought to life on television is a real celebration.’

Sherlock writer Steve Thompson also helped create the show and said: ‘It’s a privilege and a thrill to have the opportunity to adapt these wonderful books for television.

‘Elizabeth George’s iconic characters are greatly loved and her gripping stories are smart and ingenious.’

Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, Sue Deeks said: ‘There is so much to enjoy in this new and exciting adaptation, both for fans of Elizabeth George’s gripping novels and of the BBC’s iconic The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, and for viewers yet to encounter the magnetic attraction of Lynley.’

Actress Sofia took to Instagram last year to share some behind the scenes clips from filming.

She captioned the post: ‘That’s a wrap on LYNLEY, coming for you 2025 #lynley #bbc.’

Fans are already struggling to contain their excitement over the news. 

One wrote: ‘YAHOOOOO!!! Can’t wait to watch this!!!’

Another added: ‘I’m looking forward to seeing this! Bravo to you both!’

A third confessed: ‘Cannot wait to watch this.’

‘GREAT. CAN’T WAIT.WHEN??? EVERYBODY IS WAITING. FABULOUS,’ a fourth said. 

Another chimed in: ‘Beyond excited – the books are excellent fun!’ 

Sherlock first hit our screens in 2010. 

The show, which is based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels of the same name, aired 13 episodes over 4 seasons and wrapped up in 2017. 

It starred Benedict Cumberbatch in the тιтular role with Martin Freeman as his beloved sidekick Watson. 

It aired on BBC One in the UK and PBS in the US, with all episodes available to stream on iPlayer now.
