White Lotus star dropped out of Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame over pay dispute

The White Lotus star Carrie Coon previously dropped out of the Marvel film Avengers: Endgame due to a pay dispute.

The Emmy-nominated actress, 44 — who currently stars in the third season of the hit HBO anthology series — portrayed the character of Proxima Midnight in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and had been asked to reprise the role once again for Endgame.

However, her husband Tracy Letts revealed during an episode of The Big Picture podcast that upon learning she would not receive any pay raise — Coon opted to exit from the project.

‘I believe [Marvel] went to her for the second one, and they asked her to be in the second one,’ the Lady Bird actor explained, per People.

‘And she said, “Well, the first one is the most successful movie ever made. Are you going to pay me any more money?” And they said, “No. We’re not going to pay you any more money.”‘

Letts added that his wife had said, ‘”Wow, you’re not going to pay me any more money, then I don’t think I’m going to do it.”‘

In response, Carrie had been told, ‘”Well, you should feel yourself fortunate to be part of the Marvel Universe.” So she declined.

‘We would’ve made a bigger deal out of this, but it would have involved us watching the movies and we weren’t going to do that.’

Coon took on the role of Proxima Midnight — one of Thanos’ henchmen — in Avengers: Infinity War which she portrayed via voice acting and motion capture.

The movie was a sequel to Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015) and also starred Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen and Josh Brolin.

The project was a box office success upon its release in theaters and raked in around $2 billion globally on a budget of $325 to $400 million.

Avengers: Endgame (2019) was also critically acclaimed and garnered $2.799 billion in the box office.

During a past interview with People TV’s Couch Surfing, Carrie had stated that she turned down the role in the sequel due to scheduling conflicts.

Coon — who also stars in HBO’s The Gilded Age — has reflected on her time in the MCU and back in 2018, she revealed to Entertainment Weekly how she snagged her role in Infinity War.

‘It started as a voiceover audition. They were just looking for the voice of Proxima Midnight, and [they reached out] perhaps because they were interested in my voice or maybe because I’ve actually done motion-capture work previously.’

Coon added, ‘I used to do motion-capture work for video games, back in Madison, Wisconsin. I was an athlete in college, and so it was very physical work that I enjoyed tremendously, and I had such a ball working on it.’

During production of the film, the actress was pregnant and recalled, ‘I flew down to Atlanta and did some mo-cap, mostly the facial capture.

‘Of course, I can’t take credit for all of it — it’s a gifted team of animators that are taking on the bulk of that performance.’

The star continued, ‘But it morphed from a voiceover job into a mo-cap job, and then suddenly I realized I was in the highest-grossing movie of the year.’

Carrie admitted to the outlet that she had not been too ‘familiar’ with the Marvel franchise prior to being cast in the movie.

‘I’m a bit of a book nerd and don’t know much about the comic-book world, but it’s been so much fun to get to understand it a little bit.’

She added, ‘Realizing all the people that I was rubbing elbows with, in that CGI world, was really a revelation to me. It was a lot of fun.’

In regards to why she still portrayed the character, Carrie expressed to Collider: ‘But ultimately, I had done motion capture for video games in graduate school and it was a really unusual opportunity that most actors would kill for!

‘And who am I to say no to that? But the process was just unlike anything I’ve ever done so it had its own challenges, you know?’

Coon further stated, ‘And yeah, I get asked about that, I’ve signed more autographs for that movie than I have for all of my other work combined.’

Despite the actress dropping out of the Avengers franchise, she is also known for other projects such as Gone Girl, The Leftovers, The Gilded Age and most recently The White Lotus.

The current third season of the series takes place in Thailand and also stars Leslie Gibb, Michelle Monaghan Jason Isaacs, Lalisa Manobal (LISA of Blackpink), Walton Goggins and Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Coon took on the role of Laurie Duffy — a corporate lawyer and divorcee who reunited with pals for a girls’ trip.

During a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar last month in March, the star opened up about the premise of the third season and the series itself.

‘I love that it’s confronting,’ she said of her character’s friendship that begins to unravel throughout the episodes. ‘I love that it can even be off-putting. I love art that’s a little bit off-putting,’ she explained.

Carrie later added, ‘I think we understood how our storyline functioned within the season. Some of the storylines this year are quite confronting, transgressive.

‘I would say that our storyline was the most relatable because it’s the one piece of the puzzle that everybody has some relationship to.’

The actress continued, ‘The other stuff may feel far from people’s own experiences, but I think everybody has some idea understanding of female friendship, whether it be personally or culturally.’
