Newly single Sydney Sweeney is continuing to branch out of the romantic comedy genre following the global success of her hit 2023 film, Anyone But You. 

Despite her and Glen Powell’s box office hit grossing more than $220 million, the 27-year-old actress is continuing to seek projects outside her comfort zone. 

Following news that she recently called off her wedding to fiancé Jonathan Davino, a source told Variety she is reportedly in ‘final talks’ to star in Legendary’s Gundam movie. 

At this time, details about her role in the live-action film are under wraps. 

The upcoming Gundam movie is a remake of the 1979 anime Mobile Suit Gundam, which is a military science fiction, action, adventure, drama, fantasy, and war film.

Although the star previously teased she would be open to doing a sequel to Anyone But You, she has bucked expectations by not leaning into the rom-com genre.

This includes signing on to play former professional boxer Christy Martin in a biographical sports drama film, leading a film adaptation of The Housemaid bestseller and returning for season three of Euphoria. 

Sweeney, who launched her production company Fifty-Fifty Films in 2020, has seen career opportunities explode over the past few years with her Marvel movie, Madame Web, and success starring in TV shows like The White Lotus and Sharp Objects.

In 2022, she received two Emmy nominations for Euphoria and The White Lotus. 

Her last two movies include the horror film, Immaculate, in which she plays a young nun named Cecilia, and the survival thriller, Eden. 

Both were released in 2024. 

Earlier this week, a source claimed to People that her desire to focus on work contributed to her split from Davino.

‘She’s exactly where she wants to be. Most people would feel overwhelmed by her working schedule this year, but not Syd. She’s all about working right now and very excited about all her projects,’ the source says of Sweeney,’ the insider revealed. 

They continued: ‘What did make her overwhelmed though was her relationship and her wedding. She didn’t feel right about it.’

At this time, Sweeney ‘wants to focus on right now’ and celebrate being ‘in the middle of this magical career that she could only dream of a few years ago.’ 

‘She’s not ready to settle down,’ the insider added. ‘They only lasted for this long because it was hard for her to break it off. They didn’t split because there is no love. They split because she just wants to focus on her career right now.’ 

It was reported last week that the actress and film producer, 41, scrapped their wedding plans due to ‘major issues.’

The former started dating in 2018 and got engaged in 2022, but for the most part kept their relationship ᴀssiduously private.

On Monday, a source told People that Sweeney and Davino’s relationship had been ‘rocky for a long time.’

The source said that Sydney met up with Glen because his sister Leslie invited her to her wedding in Texas over the weekend.

The day after the ceremony on Saturday, the Anyone But You co-stars grabbed a bite together at a local Dallas restaurant, as seen in pH๏τos shared by gossip site DeuxMoi on Instagram.

‘Sydney is close with the entire family,’ the source said before adding that Sweeney and Powell’s sister have ‘been close friends for a long time.’
