The White Lotus star ‘favourite’ to play James Bond after huge series success – as Amazon announces BIG change to franchise

The White Lotus star ‘favourite’ to play James Bond after huge series success – as Amazon announces BIG change to franchise

A star from The White Lotus has been dubbed the ‘favourite’ to play the next James Bond after the series saw huge success.

Actor Theo James, 40, portrayed smug holidaymaker Cameron Sullivan in the second season of the HBO black comedy drama which was created by Mike White.

The series followed the guests and employees of the fictional White Lotus resort chain, whose interactions are affected by their various psychosocial dysfunctions.

Now, Theo has been plugged as a possible contender to replace Daniel Craig who has played the 007 spy since 2006, according to The Sun.

Coral told the publication that he currently stands at 2-1 odds of being the next Bond after a surge of bets in his favour.

John Hill from Coral said: ‘We have seen a strong wave of support for Theo James over the weekend which has forced us to slash the odds on The Monkey star replacing Daniel Craig.’

Speaking of his role in the critically acclaimed HBO series, Theo previously said: ‘People think once you’ve “made it”, the doors just swing open. But the truth is, you’re always hustling.’

He continued: ‘Even with The White Lotus, I had to fight for that role. There’s this balance between what you want and what the industry thinks you should want.’

Theo explained how the ‘gnawing sense of insecurity’ behind Cameron’s bravado is what drew him to the character.

‘I’ve always been drawn to the contradictions in people. It’s the flaws that make a character interesting. I suppose the same could be said about us all,’ he added.

However, Theo may not be a contender after it was revealed Amazon bosses are reportedly planning to cast the youngest ever James Bond – and the new film will be set in the 1950s and ’60s.

The streaming giant, who bought creative control of the James Bond franchise earlier this year, is said to be keen to hire an actor in their 20s.

A TV insider told The Sun: ‘As sensational as it was, Daniel’s exit caused a headache because the death is still fresh in the minds of fans.

‘They can’t just pretend it didn’t happen. So they’re now looking at his story as younger man in a different era.’

It comes after the Daily Mail revealed James Bond will remain a man and will still be British or from the Commonwealth – despite the films being taken over by ‘woke’ Hollywood.

Fans of 007 feared Amazon Studios – owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos – would corrupt the British super spy after buying the Bond franchise and rights for £770 million from Bond stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson.

But The Mail on Sunday can reveal that Amazon this week circulated an internal memo stipulating the spy will not change gender or nationality.

MailOnline has contacted Amazon for comment.

It comes as Daniel Craig revealed on Sunday how he found out he landed the role of James Bond and how he celebrated during a new interview in Milan, Italy.

The actor took on the role of 007 in Casino Royale back in 2006 and went on to star four more films, Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015), and No Time to Die (2021).

Now, Daniel, who was sworn to secrecy about the role at the time, revealed that he found out the news in a supermarket and had to celebrate alone.

Speaking to host Fabio Fazio to promote new film Queer on Italian TV show Che Tempo Che Fa, he said: ‘When I found out I was in the supermarket.

‘I had this trolley full of food, I gave it a shove, I threw it aside, I took a bottle of vodka and I said, “Now I’m going to have a Martini!”‘.

Daniel added on the legendary role: ‘Even today I look at these images and I can hardly believe it. I still can’t get over it, it was such an important part of my life’.

The White Lotus airs on Sky Atlantic in the UK and is available to stream on NOW.
