The White Lotus star Carrie Coon just revealed a shocking storyline involving her character Laurie Duffy that creator Mike White cut from his critically-acclaimed hit HBO show following the November 5th re-election of President Donald Trump.

The 44-year-old actress filmed her role as corporate lawyer and recent divorcée from New York on the Thailand set between February 2024-August 2024, and she sH๏τ a scene where Laurie hinted that her troubled daughter Ellie was transgender or non-binary.

‘You see Laurie struggling to explain it to her friends, struggling to use they/them pronouns, struggling with the language, which was all interesting,’ Carrie told Harper’s Bazaar last Friday.

‘It was only a short scene, but for me, it did make the question of whether Kate [Bohr] voted for Trump so much more provocative and personally offensive to Laurie, considering who her child is in the world. But the season was written before the election.

‘And considering the way the Trump administration has weaponized the cultural war against transgender people even more since then, when the time came to cut the episode down, Mike felt that the scene was so small and the topic so big that it wasn’t the right way to engage in that conversation.’

Coon was referring to a key scene in the March 2nd episode where the Texan country club wife played by Leslie Bibb confessed to her childhood gal pals that she was an ‘independent’ who likely voted for Trump and then witnesses the pair gossiping about her politics behind her back.

‘I love that it’s confronting. I love that it can even be off-putting. I like art that’s a little bit off-putting,’ the real-life Democrat said.

‘That’s why it’s fun to watch Mike’s characters. They’re not just one thing. Mike White grew up in the evangelical church. He grew up in some pretty specific communities, some of which were maybe not as welcoming to him, ultimately.

‘His father wrote a very influential book about what it was like to come out as a gay man himself in the evangelical church as an adult, which a lot of young men have read and was a very meaningful text for them in their own journeys. So Mike doesn’t shy away from challenging cultural conversations, and I really appreciate that about his work.’

Carrie considers ‘The Blonde Blob’ – consisting of Laurie, Kate, and Jaclyn Lemon (Michelle Monaghan) – the most ‘relatable’ of season three.

‘It’s the one piece of the puzzle that everybody has some relationship to,’ Coon noted.

‘The other stuff may feel far from people’s own experiences, but I think everybody has some idea understanding of female friendship, whether it be personally or culturally.’

The two-time Emmy nominee said if the three gal pals had just been honest about where they were in their lives and how they were feeling they would’ve had a very different vacation.

‘But they didn’t. They kept up the the performance. No relationship can survive that lack of honesty,’ Carrie explained.

‘And I think Laurie’s an alcoholic, and I don’t think you can continue to be an alcoholic and live a fully examined life. Those two things don’t really go together.’

Coon continued: ‘I made a choice to make sure she was always drinking and that she always had one glᴀss half gone and another one on the way. That’s how she’s vacationing. Her life is falling apart, and she’s not being honest about it. And, geez, how many people are moving through the world that way?’

The White Lotus third season concludes this Sunday with an episode тιтled ‘Amor Fati.’
