Legendary singer announces his final performance due to memory issues after ‘accelerated’ decline in health

Legendary singer Johnny Mathis has announced his final performance due to memory issues. 

After suffering an ‘accelerated’ decline in health, the musician, 89, revealed his final show’s will take place in May, meaning the remainder of his tour in now cancelled. 

In an update shared to Johnny’s official Facebook page on Thursday, his team explained that whilst he would be retiring from touring, new music was in the works. 

The wrote: ‘While there are still some exciting concerts coming up, regrettably all Johnny Mathis concerts from June 2025 onwards are now cancelled.

‘Please read the notice below, and contact individual venues directly with all ticket questions. Refunds will be made through the original point of purchase. Thank you, Mathis Fans.’

The update was met by an outpouring of love and support from fans who wished Johnny well in the comments section.

In a further update, they added: ‘Wow. Thank you so very much on Johnny’s behalf for your kind messages! To answer a couple repeat questions…

‘Its a lovely idea, but unfortunately filming or streaming the final concerts is not going to be possible. We’re sorry for any disappointment.

‘Johnny is just retiring from touring and concerts, so the good news is there is potentially new music in the works. Check back for news on this.

‘The final concerts are just in the U.S., and these dates can be found on the official Johnny Mathis website below.Thank you on Johnny’s behalf for all your support of his music.’

At the height of his fame Johnny was widely compared to other iconic easy listening greats such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett and he is listed as the third best selling artist of the 20th century.

The superstar crooner sold 360 million records worldwide over his famed career that dates back to the mid-1950s and has a reported net worth of $400 million.

After realising his son’s talent at a young age, Johnny’s father, who worked in vaudeville as a singer and pianist, encouraged him to pursue music by buying him an upright piano.

At 13, he got to study under the tutelage of voice teacher Connie Cox after accepting him as her student in exchange for work around her house in the late 1940s.

He ended up honing his craft with Cox for six years, learning vocal scales and exercises, voice production, classical and operatic singing.

In a show of respect and graтιтude, Johnny took to social media back in May 2018 and shared a pH๏τo of Cox, along with a message about how instrumental she was in helping teach him about singing and music as a whole.

‘Here is a rare pH๏τo of Connie Cox, the wonderful teacher that helped young Johnny fine tune his vocal skills, trading chores at her studio for vocal lessons,’ he wrote in the caption on X – formerly Twitter. 

’62 years later he still sings her praises daily. Thank goodness for teachers like her! #TeacherAppreciationDay.’

While many people have described his style as a romantic singer, Mathis’s catalog of music includes standard pop, Latin American, soul, R&B, show tunes, Tin Pan Alley, soft rock, blues, country, and even a little disco in the late 1970s.

During his illustrious career that dates back to 1956, Mathis has recorded a staggering 73 studio albums, 10 of which achieved sales of 500,000 units to earn him Gold certification by the Recording Industry ᴀssociation of America.

He has had five of his albums on the Billboard charts simultaneously, an achievement equaled by only three other singers that included Frank Sinatra, Barry Manilow and Prince

In 2003, the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences awarded him with the Lifetime Achievement Award. This Special Merit Award is presented by vote of the Recording Academy’s National Trustees to performers who have made creative contributions of outstanding artist significance to the field of recording.

Mathis has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for three separate recordings, which included Chances Are (1998), Misty (2002), It’s Not For Me To Say (2008).
