Legendary nineties series set for epic TV return after lead star writes Christmas special to bring cast back together

A legendary nineties series is primed for an epic TV return after the lead star vowed to write a Christmas special to bring the cast back together.

Cold Feet first aired back in 1997 until 2003 and starred James Nesbitt, John Thomson, Hermione Norris and Helen Baxendale amongst others.

The ITV comedy returned again in 2016 for just four seasons before being pulled from screens in 2020.

Cold Feet won several BAFTAs and ran for nine seasons with a total of 59 episodes following three couples from Manchester as they navigate the highs and lows of their relationships.

However, one of the show’s stars, John Thomson, 55, has revealed plans to write a Christmas special and ‘thinks it’s time’ to bring the drama back.

On the We’re Not Getting Any Younger podcast, he said: ‘We were off air for 13 years and we came back and we had a mᴀssive hit again.

‘We had an absence of 13 years and then we came back in 2016. It was just as big a hit.’

The actor added: ‘It’s always the same, people go, “Is it coming back.” I say, “Never say never.”

‘I’ve said I’ll write a Christmas special, I think it’s time. You don’t leave it too long. ‘There’s so much politics in telly now though it’s hard.’

John explained how lots of things have prevented filming additional instalments like the pandemic.

He also shared how he is concerned there are limited casting opportunities for him as a ‘white, middle class, middle-aged straight actor’.

‘As far as bankability or castability, or popularity stakes go as actors, I’m the worst,’ John said. ‘I’m a white, middle class, middle-aged straight actor, and they don’t want us anymore.’

He added: ‘I don’t think so, not really. Maybe occasionally. I’ve got to think about what else I can do.’

The actor went on to star in Coronation Street and joined the soap back in 2008 as hapless children’s entertainer Jesse Chadwick before he left in 2010.

He returned again in 2024 as part of Gail Platt’s (Helen Worth) exit story line just as Jesse’s ex Eileen Grimshaw returned from a holiday in Thailand.

Cold Feet is available to stream on ITVX.
