Coronation Street star has joined the cast of Doctor Who in an ‘exciting and unforgettable’ episode – 11 years after leaving the soap

Charlie Condou is set to join the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) for an adventure in time and space for the new series of Doctor Who.

The British actor, 52, who portrayed Marcus Dent on Coronation Street from 2007 to 2014, is no stranger to the Whoniverse, having voiced characters in several Doctor Who Big Finish audio dramas.

This time, however, Charlie will come face to face with Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor in an exciting new escapade.

Speaking about his new role on the show, Charlie expressed his excitement to the BBC: ‘I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining the Whoniverse, having been a fan for so long, and finally getting a chance to work with the legend that is Russell T Davies!

‘It’s an honour to be part of such an iconic show and I can’t wait for everyone to see what I think is one of the most exciting and unforgettable episodes so far!’

Doctor Who producer Russell T Davies, 61, added: ‘Welcome on board, Charlie. Some episodes of Doctor Who are so big and bold, they need all the talent we can throw at them, and that’s when you call for Charlie Condou!

‘It’s a delight to work with him at last, and I can’t wait for people to see the wildness of this story.’

Doctor Who is produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios for the BBC and Disney Branded Television.

The second season will air on April 12 exclusively on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Disney+ outside of the UK (where available).

Charlie will follow in the footsteps of his former Coronation Street co-stars Bruno Langley, Sarah Lancashire and Millie Gibson – who plays the current Time Lord’s sidekick, Ruby Sunday.

In February 2020, Charlie revealed that he left the ITV soap in 2014 to spend more time with his family in North London.

He played Marcus on the Manchester-based soap from 2007–08 and again from 2011 to 2014.

His character had several dramatic storylines, including romances with Sean Tully (Antony Cotton), Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon), and Todd Grimshaw (Bruno Langley).

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly at the time, he said: ‘My time on Corrie was fantastic but being in Manchester was really difficult, my family and my kids are down here and I wasn’t getting to see them, that’s why I left.’

Charlie is raising his two children, Georgia, 14, and Hal, 11, with his husband Cameron Laux – who he married in 2015.

This announcement comes months after Russell stated that ‘no decision’ had been made yet regarding the lineup for series three.

Appearing at Comic Con in San Diego alongside Ncuti, 31, and Millie, 20, the screenwriter spoke about what was in store for the iconic show.

Russell admitted that decisions about who would star in series three hadn’t been made, as they were still filming season two.

He said at the time: ‘We’ve sH๏τ season two, but that’s only halfway through. We’ve got all those months of post to come. It’s a long way off, so no decisions yet.’

Meanwhile, Ncuti said playing the Doctor is ‘surreal’ and when the host joked he had signed up for the next 10 seasons, he replied: ‘Of course!’.

‘I am still growing into the Doctor but season two was lovely. It felt like the suit was fully fitted. I was finding my feet in season one and having the time of my life but season two felt like a chance to flex the muscles properly,’ he said, according to The Mirror.
