Snow White live-action movie debuts at the box office with disappointing $43 million amid ‘woke’ backlash

Snow White live-action movie debuts at the box office with disappointing million amid ‘woke’ backlash

The new live-action Snow White has debuted at the box office with a disappointing $43 million domestically amid another lackluster weekend.

The fairy tale starring Rachel Zegler, 23, earned $43 million domestically and another $44.3 million internationally, for a total take of $87.3 million globally, according to The Numbers. It was number one at the box office this weekend.

Severe weather in hard hit areas of the US already affected by last weekend’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅly tornadoes and thunderstorms may have had some effect on the low turnout.

Others may have stayed away due to criticism of the film being ‘woke’ in the casting of Zegler, who is Colombian-American, or due to the poor reviews the film received from critics.

Rotten Tomatoes gave it a consensus score of 43-percent, although audiences gave it a much kinder 74-percent rating.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s not time to bite the poison apple just yet, as there is hope from Disney that the female skewing film may have a long life, similar to that of the live action Mufasa: The Lion King, which opened with only $35 million, but has gone on to pull in more than $700 million worldwide, so far.

The film has enjoyed a steady viewership in the US and around the world, earning some $400.8 million in total to date.

Mickey 17 starring Robert Pattinson as an ‘expendable’ person who goes on a dangerous mission to tame a frozen planet, only to be replicated each time he is killed, landed in fourth place, with a weekend total of $3.9 million.
