The hidden challenges behind filming Netflix’s Adolescence revealed as crew share poignant message

The hidden challenges behind filming Netflix’s Adolescence revealed as crew share poignant message

Netflix’s Adolescence has become a huge hit since it hit the streaming service last week.

The crime drama, directed by Philip Barantini, 44, follows the story of a 13-year-old boy called Jamie Miller who has been accused of stabbing his classmate to death.

The four-part series has become a huge talking point in the past week, because of its message about today’s society, and the fact that each episode was filmed in one continuous sH๏τ.

And this definitely meant that it came with some challenges.

Director Philip told The Independent: ‘[Tech rehearsals] would be an opportunity for the sound team to put the booms where they needed to be.

‘And, we had all the support and the runners and ADs all dressed in police uniforms in the first episode and teachers in the second episode so they could be on camera and cueing things.

‘It was technically challenging, but a huge collaboration… sort of a dance really.’

The cast and crew had a very busy few weeks leading up to shooting the scenes, with one week of rehearsals for the cast, and another for the tech crew.

Adolescence was also created and written by actor Stephen Graham – who plays Jamie’s dad Eddie Miller in the show – and Jack Thorne.

Jack also revealed what the series is really about.

He told the publication: ‘Really what it’s about is looking at male rage and looking at our own anger and looking at who we are as men.

‘We’re all three very different types of men, but we all have a relationship with anger.

‘And I think that’s what I’m proudest of in the show is that we looked at ourselves and I think that honesty shows through on the screen.’

Adolescence has incredible cast, including Stephen, Owen and Ashley Walters.

Stephen recently reveled the two real-life incidents that inspired him to write the new Netflix hit.

Speaking on Chris Moyles’ Radio X show, he said: ‘Okay, let’s get this serious nature of the show out the way, and then we can have some fun, with all due respect.

‘Look, it started when I read an article, and it was an article about a young boy who’d stabbed a young girl to death, and it just, you know, it made me feel cold.

‘And then a couple of months later, there was a piece on the news, and it was about a young boy who’d stabbed a young girl to death, and if I’m really honest with you, they hurt my heart.

‘And these two incidents were opposite ends of the country. And I just thought, “Why? Why is this happening?”

‘Not just because I’m a father, but I think any kind of human being with an ounce of moral compᴀss can look at that kind of situation and think, “What’s happening? What’s going on with society today that we’re in?”‘

He added: ‘We’re entering this kind of era where there was, like, four, five, six, seven cases of young boys – and I’m going to call them young boys, they’re not men – stabbing girls to death,’ he said.

‘And, you know, that beautiful saying, “It takes a takes a village to raise a child”, I just wanted to create something that kind of looked at it from that perspective, but also looked at it like, look, maybe we are all slightly accountable in some way, be that parents, be that school, be that government, community, society.

‘And now, let’s be completely honest, when I was a kid, when we were kids, we didn’t have these kind of things.

‘But today, the internet is as much of a teacher and a parent to our children as we can be. Do you know what I mean? And that was kind of where it came from.’

They are joined by Erin Doherty, Faye Marsay, Christine Tremarco, Mark Stanley, Jo Hartley and Austin Haynes.

Fans will be shocked to know that Stephen’s wife Hannah actually had a surprising cameo in the new hit.

The actress and producer, 48, appeared in episode two as Mrs. Bailey – a teacher at Bruntwood Academy who reprimands Katie’s grief-stricken best friend Jade (Fatima Bojang) for punching Ryan (Kaine Davis).

And Owen has revealed which iconic role he wants to play next after the Netflix series made the 15-year-old famous overnight.

Many have called for the youngster to receive a BAFTA nomination.

In a recent interview, he revealed that he’d love to replace Tom Holland, 28, in the Spider Man franchise.
