Bill Murray opens up about the pep talk he gave to the writers before the SNL 50th Anniversary special

Nearly a month after the beloved Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary special, Bill Murray is opening up about a special talk he had with the writers.

The 74-year-old actor joined SNL in its second season bacak in 1977 and stayed on for three seasons before focusing on movie roles in the 1980s.

He would return to host the show five times over the years, and he played a big part in the SNL50 special, both on and off screen.

The actor appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show on Wednesday to promote his new movie Riff Raff, currently in theaters, when he was asked about a chat he had with the writers.

Barrymore mentioned recent comments by Tina Fey about a pep talk Murray had with the writers, which she thought was ‘lovely.’

Murray – who recently spoke about rumors he’s dating singer Kelis – revealed why he gave them a pep talk in the first place.

‘Well, they were having a meeting and I just sort of walked into the meeting, you know it’s Lorne’s meeting and he’s sitting there,’ Murray began.

‘And there were all the writers, sitting in the room, and it was grim. It was very grim, and it just felt very heavy,’ Murray added.

The beloved funnyman added that he had, ‘already seen some of the planning and I was really excited, and I was just trying to share with them how beautiful it was going to be.’

He added, ‘what a wonderful responsibility it was going to be,’ because so many people would be watching it.

‘I thought it was destined to be an extraordinary success and it was going to be great, and let’s open a window because it’s H๏τ in here,’ he said of his speech.

Murray added, ‘That’s pretty much what I said, and Tina really enjoyed that, and I guess the other writers too.’

‘It just seemed they needed a little kick, a little boost,’ Murray said, adding, ‘I wasn’t acting, I meant it, and they certainly delivered.’

Barrymore thought, ‘they needed it in that moment,’ adding that they probably felt, ‘the weight of the world’ in pulling off a task so daunting.

Murray added, ‘No, it was a big thing. If you saw the thousands of people marching around Rockefeller Center for weeks, getting that thing together, the amount of work the whole city of New York did to make that thing happen, it was a great moment for the city.’

The actor added that he really felt, ‘a sense of fraternity’ by being there, seeing, ‘everyone pulling for everyone in every single sketch.’

Murray is part of a star-studded cast in Riff Raff alongside another SNL phenom, Pete Davidson.

The film also stars Ed Harris, Jennifer Coolidge, Gabrielle Union, Miles J. Harvey and Louis Pullman.
