Halyna Hutchins’s co-workers on doomed Alec Baldwin movie Rust admitted in a brand new documentary that they ‘did not feel safe’ while shooting the film.
Hollywood star Alec, 66, fatally sH๏τ the cinematographer on the set of the western in October 2021, but the criminal case against him in Santa Fe, New Mexico, was thrown out of court last July.
The Oscar-nominated actor broke down in tears and hugged his wife as his involuntary manslaughter case was sensationally dismissed after a judge said there had been errors by the prosecution in the handling of evidence, which she said ‘impacted the fundamental fairness of the case’.
Now a heart-wrenching documentary has shed light on Halyna’s final moments before her death aged 42, piecing together footage from the set and interviews with crew members, including the movie’s director Joel Souza and actress Frances Fisher.
Last Take: Rust And The Story Of Halyna, which airs on Hulu on Tuesday, sees a string of Halyna’s colleagues reveal they ‘did not feel safe’ while filming the movie and also alleging that seven members of the camera team walked off set on the day she died.
тιтanic star Frances told the documentary – directed by Halyna’s friend Rachel Mason – how she had been struck by seeing armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed walking across the set with several guns in her arms.

Gutierrez-Reed was given an 18-month jail sentence in April 2024 after being convicted of a single charge of involuntary manslaughter and is currently serving her sentence at the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Facility.
Frances said: ‘My first day coming out of hair and makeup in my full costume, and Alec is at base camp and he’s in his costume, this girl comes over and interrupts our conversation.
‘She’s got an armful of guns, just barrelled her way in, and I thought, it’s very unsafe to be walking around base camp with a whole bunch of guns in your hand. Like, have they been cleared? Why are you doing this?
‘And Alec, he seemed a little, “What’s she doing?” Then I found out she was the armorer. I thought, wow.’
Describing the armourer, who is the daughter of famous armourer and stuntman Thell Reed, and the way she went about her job, Frances added: ‘Sloppiness. It’s just pure sloppiness. Unprofessional.
‘The sloppiness that Hannah displayed that first day of mine. I wish I had said something to her and I wish I had said something to Alec.
‘But I didn’t want to make waves. And would my alerting somebody, would that have changed anything? That’s what gnaws at me.’
Frances was not the only one to feel unsafe on set.

First camera ᴀssistant Lane Luper expressed regretting at not making his concerns clear to his colleague Halyna
тιтanic star Frances Fisher was one of a number of crew members to feel unsafe on the set of the western which was being filmed in New Mexico in 2021
Lane Luper, first camera ᴀssistant on Rust, allegedly led six of his colleagues in quitting their involvement in shooting the movie on the day Halyna died.
The cameraman told the documentary that problems including ‘lax COVID policies, gun safety and lack of rehearsals’ had influenced the dramatic decision.
He said: ‘It felt like they really didn’t care about the crew being safe. We wanted them to solve these problems. It very quickly felt like somebody was going to get hurt if something didn’t change.
‘Seeing how firearms were handled on set began to really bother me.’
Lane also expressed regretting at not making these concerns clear to his colleague Halyna.
‘I was worried about her safety but I didn’t get a chance,’ he admitted. ‘I didn’t tell her… I should have.’
Special effects coordinator Thomas Gandy went into more detail about Lane and co’s alleged walkout, explaining that it left Halyna and director Joel alone in shooting an important scene.
He said: ‘They chose to walk out on the day we were having the biggest shootout of the whole show.
The documentary also looked back on how the movie set was investigated by the New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety Bureau (OHS Bureau) before Halyna died

’99 percent of the time, you got a tent that’s got a number of video monitors. They are showing the camera’s view. The director and the DP, typically, they stand in video village where they look at the exact sH๏τ that’s going to be on film.
‘They’re 20 to 30 feet away. So, that day, there was a walkout. We didn’t have video village that day. And so, because of that, it put Halyna and Joel in front of the camera.’
Asked by the documentary’s director Rachel if ‘the only thing between [Halyna] and the gun was her own hands’, Thomas simply said: ‘Yes, yes.’
First ᴀssistant director Dave Halls was the only one of the three charged following the incident to take part in the show, after Alec declined the opportunity, and he took the opportunity to express his regret at what happened.
He also explained that he was aware of Gutierrez-Reed’s lack of experience but that her father’s reputation had mitigated against this.
Dave told Last Take: ‘I knew that she had little experience. But concern over lack of experience was tempered by knowing that her father was Thell Reed.’
The documentary also looked back on how the movie set was investigated by the New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety Bureau (OHS Bureau) in October 2021, the month that Halyna died.
Asked by the body if she had enough time and resources to perform her duties on Rust, Gutierrez-Reed said: ‘Absolutely not.’
Matthew Hutchins, who was married to victim Halyna for 16 years (pictured, with their son Andros), said in a statement after the shock ruling that he looks forward to ‘holding Mr Baldwin accountable for his actions’
The documentary comes after lawyer Gloria Allred said that Alec’s new TLC show The Baldwins (pictured) provides a sad juxtaposition

Last Take also explained that Gabrielle Pickle, a line producer for the movie, told the armourer she should spend less time on guns and more on supporting props.
Gutierrez-Reed responded to the email: ‘When I’m forced to do both [jobs], that’s when mistakes get made like [a] sH๏τgun being unattended,’ referencing an incident where a firearm was left unattended.
The documentary comes after lawyer Gloria Allred said that Alec’s new TLC show The Baldwins – showing him and wife Hilaria, 41, raising their seven young children – provides a sad juxtaposition in the wake of the fatal shooting on the set of Rust.
‘The Baldwin reality show at once celebrates Mr. Baldwin’s joy of being with his children while ignoring the fact that Alec Baldwin took a child away from her parents,’ she said. ‘That is the painful and actual reality with which Halyna’s parents and sister live each and every day.’
