Gabrielle Union teases Bring It On sequel with Kirsten Dunst and admits her kids don’t like the original

Over 25 years before the original Bring It On hit theaters, Gabrielle Union teased that a follow-up may be in the works.

The original film starred Union and Kirsten Dunst as the heads of rival cheerleading teams as they prepare for the national championships.

Bring It On wasn’t a mᴀssive box office hit upon its theatrical release in August 2000, taking in $90.4 million from an $11 million budget, but gained an enduring fan base.

The film also spawned five direct-to-video sequels and a television movie sequel, none of which featured any of the original cast members, as well as a Broadway musical stage adaptation.

Now it seems that Union and Dunst are ready to return for a sequel, with Union teasing a sequel during Monday’s appearance of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live.

She also admitted during the episode that neither of her kids – 17-year-old Zaya or 6-year-old Kaavia – enjoyed the beloved original, which comes after she opened up about husband Dwyane Wade’s cancer diagnosis.

Union was asked by a fan when the last time she saw Dunst, and asked about her comments about revisiting the original.

‘Well, I ran into Kiki a couple of months ago. Our kids are around the same age, and her child goes to school with one of Kaav’s best friends,’ Union began.

‘So, I see her kind of more regularly, and we, perhaps, maybe all have been working on something,’ Union teased, as the crowd applauded.

Another fan asked which of her movies are her kids’ favorites, as she revealed Kaavia’s is the 2022 Disney animated film Strange World and her Disney 2022 remake of Cheaper By the Dozen.

‘For Zaya, who notoriously watches nothing, probably like Inspection,’ she said of her 2022 drama with Jeremy Pope and Bokeem Woodbine.

She added, ‘However, I was hoping one of them would have liked Bring it On,’ as host Andy Cohen admitted, ‘I’m kind of stunned.’

‘Not a one. Not a one,’ Union said, as Cohen asked, ‘Didn’t care for it?’ She said, ‘At all! I keep trying, Kaav’s like, “Bluey.”‘

Union also recently teased a Bring It On follow-up in a recent interview with CBR, where she said, ‘I mean, it’s so interesting, because there may or may not be something in the works, that, you know, we’ve all been working on for a very long time.’

The original Bring It On follows Dunst’s Torrance Shipman, a San Diego cheerleader whose team is vying for their sixth straight national championship.

After a new cheerleader (Eliza Dushku) joins the team, she learns the previous captain had stolen routines from a Compton squad lead by Isis (Union).

They both try to lead their teams to a national тιтle, something Isis’ Compton squad could never afford to attend.

The film was directed by Peyton Reed, written by Jessica Bendinger and also starred Jesse Bradford, Clare Kramer and Lindsay Sloane.
