Saturday Kitchen’s Matt Tebʙuтт reveals how he truly feels going live on air on BBC Breakfast as it’s revealed he’s ‘in talks’ to replace Gregg Wallace on MasterChef

Saturday Kitchen star Matt Tebʙuтт has opened up about he truly feels when going live on BBC Breakfast when on the show.

The 51-year-old, who is reportedly in talks to replace Gregg Wallace, 60, on MasterChef, is best known for presenting a number of cooking programmes including Food Unwrapped, Market Kitchen and Great British Food Revival.

Matt has presented Saturday Kitchen for the past nine years, after taking over from former host James Martin, who presented the programme between 2006 and 2016.

The chef gets up to a lot of fun stuff on the show, including chatting to guest chefs and a range of celebrities.

Before going live, BBC Breakfast – which airs just before Saturday Kitchen – tunes into the studio to find out what viewers can expect from Matt.

Speaking about his encounters with hosts Charlie Stayt, 62,and Naga Munchetty, 50, Matt told The Express: ‘Honestly, the most on edge and the most nervous I am of the whole Saturday morning is when I get thrown to the lions in that news room.

‘And you’ve just got to sort of fend them off and come back with something, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.’

Charlie and Naga present the news show every Thursday to Saturday from 6am, while Jon Kay, 55, and Sally Nugent, 53, present Monday to Wednesday.

But despite that, he’s a huge fan of Naga and her on air banter – and just last month Matt suggested that she had to be ‘cut off’ after an awkward on-air clash.

He added to the publication: ‘I love Naga’s sense of humour. It’s a bit like the old school ground stuff where you’re sort of prod people to provoke a reaction.

‘She is as sharp as a razor and you do not know where it’s going to come from next.

‘I mean, one minute they could be talking about some awful death and destruction, and the next minute total curveball and it just catches you off guard, and as much as I dread it, I love it as well.’

On Sunday, it was revealed that Matt might be adding MasterChef to his list of TV programmes that he has presented.

Back in November Gregg stepped back from the BBC show after being under investigation over a string of allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

Gregg presented the popular show between 2005 and 2024.

Speculation over who was going to replace him ended in January when food critic Grace Dent was revealed as the new presenter.

Grace has appeared on MasterChef, MasterChef: The Professionals and Celebrity MasterChef over the years as a regular critic.

The columnist started filming the celebrity version of the programme alongside her new co-star John Torode, 59, last month.

But according to The Sun, it is not known if she will continue with the role for the main show.

A source told the publication: ‘Matt rose to the challenge of coming into Saturday Kitchen after it was previously hosted by another big name in the world of food, James Martin’.

‘He managed the feat of making it his own and almost making viewers forget who his predecessor was — now Beeb bosses, and the show producers Banijay, will be hoping he can work the same magic on MasterChef’.

Before adding: ‘Nothing is set in stone, of course, and the result of investigations into Gregg’s behaviour have yet to fully conclude.

‘But since MasterChef is such a huge show with a mᴀssive following, the Beeb are keen to have everything lined up ready’.

MailOnline contacted the BBC and Matt Tebʙuтт’s reps for comments.

Saturday Kitchen airs on BBC.
