Oscar nominated movie Wicked could soon be remade into a TV series, based on the original X-rated novel rather than the family friendly musical.
The film, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, is nominated for a whopping ten Academy Awards and is an imagined prequel to the iconic Wizard Of Oz.
The film and 2003 musical is loosely based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book, Wicked: The Life Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which features much darker themes including torture, orgies and forced castration.
The likes of Salma Hayek, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg have all tried and failed to bring the story to the small screen, but following the film’s success things may be about to change.
With the author, 70, telling The Sun: ‘For many years there has been talk of a non-musical, original TV movie or a streaming series based on Wicked the novel, not Wicked the musical.
‘While we came pretty close several times to having such an operation greenlit, it hasn’t happened yet. It may happen one day’.

Way back in 2011, Hayek was attached to produce an eight-hour miniseries adaptation of the musical.
Meanwhile in 2009 author Maguire revealed he sold the musical’s rights to ABC to make a ‘non-musical adaptation’ of the novel that will stick strictly to the book.
Two years later in 2011, ABC announced that Hayek and her Ventanarosa Productions partner Jose Tamez would serve as executive producers.
Erik Jendressen (Band of Brothers) was set to write the eight-hour miniseries, though the production never fully got off the ground.
While the TV adaptation fell through, the movie adaptation kept moving along, with actresses such as Lea Michele and Amy Adams floated for the leads of Glinda and Elphaba.
Sunday saw Wicked co-stars Ariana and Cynthia opened the 97th annual Academy Awards with a jaw-dropping medley paying tribute to the world of The Wizard Of Oz.
Grande kicked off the performance with a stunning rendition of Judy Garland’s Somewhere Over The Rainbow from the classic 1939 film.
The Grammy Award-winner, 31, wowed the star-studded audience with her incredible vocal abilities.

But it was a ‘tiny detail’ on Grande’s glittery red ballgown that sent the singer’s fans wild as they tuned into the awards ceremony on ABC.
As a clear homage to Dorothy’s iconic footwear, the singer’s custom Schiaparelli gown had a ruby slipper adorned to the back of it.

After delivering her Somewhere Over The Rainbow cover, Grande pᴀssed the mic to Erivo — who, like Grande, is nominated for an Oscar.
The Tony Award-winner performed Home from the 1975 Broadway musical The Wiz, which was later turned into a film famously starring Michael Jackson.
Erivo glittered under the stage light inside the Dolby Theatre in a billowing white gown decked out with glitzy 3D floral decals up and down the bodice.
The talented duo then launched into Wicked’s Defying Gravity as Grande and Erivo came together, holding hands.
A visibly emotional Grande then stepped to the side to allow Erivo the spotlight as she took over the final half of the epic number.
The audience erupted with applause as Erivo effortlessly hit the iconic final note in Defying Gravity while standing on a rising platform.
