BAFTA winning actor reveals how his role as ‘a pestering fan’ was cut from Notting Hill movie and Julia Roberts’ awkward reaction to him on set

A BAFTA winning star has revealed how his role as ‘a pestering fan’ was cut from 199 classic rom-com Notting Hill.

Toby Jones recalled his days work on the set and Julia Roberts’ awkward reaction him as he starred on The Graham Norton Show on Friday.

Joining Claudia Winkleman on the sofa, as she steps in for Graham, the actor, 58, spoke about his ‘strange day’ on set.

Toby explained: ‘They were worried, at the time, about the moment when Hugh Grant spills the juice on Julia’s chest and she goes back to his house to get changed.

‘The producers thought that it wouldn’t happen like that, like would she go to his flat?

‘So, they said “why don’t we get someone in to play a pestering fan, so she goes to his house as quickly as possible.” That was the part that I was offered.’

Laughing, Toby continued: ‘They didn’t even give me a name. On the day, Hugh was very kind and said “Toby, this is Julia and she was very… either she was deep in character or she really thought they had got a pestering fan.

‘There were so many strange things about that day. Things just got weirder and weirder, but I got cut out of the film.’

Claudia is standing in for Graham while he takes leave to tour Australia with his new comedy show.

As he heads to Australia for a live tour, he will present An Evening With Graham Norton, which will see the Irish presenter discuss hilarious stories and shed light on some career highlights, before taking questions from the audience.

He will be back in the autumn for a new series.

Opening the programme she said: ‘I am so sorry Graham isn’t here. To be honest nobody is more livid than me.

‘That is the horrendous news. The brilliant news is that we have excellent guests.’ she said before introducing Rob Beckett, Toby Jones, Saoirse Monica Jackson and Chris Pratt.

Amid the enormous popularity of BBC’s The Traitors, Claudia was confirmed to be heading from the Scottish Highlands to the talk show studio to take the H๏τ seat.

The presenter responded to Graham’s announcement on his show by saying: ‘I apologise in advance!’

‘I am always very nervous that people aren’t watching and then incredibly grateful that they are.

‘I feel about Traitors like people feel about an offspring – you’re so glad when people love it.’

She added: ‘I can’t say much but the producers are so clever and there are lots of twists and turns coming.’
