Survivor 48 host Jeff Probst reveals the medical intervention that was removed from the premiere episode

Jeff Probst has revealed the dramatic moment that was edited out of the premiere episode of Survivor 48.

The long-time Survivor host has revealed contestant Kevin Leung received medical attention after incurring a painful shoulder injury during the maroon challenge.

While Probst, 63, was seen calling for the medical team in a teaser for Survivor 48 and Leung was shown getting injured in the premiere, he actually required medical attention that never was shown on the episode.

Probst recounted the moment Leung first approached him complaining of pain with Entertainment Weekly.

EW was on the Fiji set at the time of the injury and reported he incurred a separated shoulder.

Due to the amount of pain Leung, 34, was in, Probst had to stop the challenge before his shoulder was popped back into place by their medical team.

Probst said he was initially taken by surprise when Leung first reported the injury.

‘Kevin kind of surprised me because I happened to be standing near him when he suddenly said, “I’m in pain, I’m in pain.” And I said, “Can you hang a second? Can you wait a second?” And he said “No.” I was like, “Okay, so he’s really in pain,”‘ Probst said.

Probst said he called in their resident doctor to treat Leung.

‘I slid the other players out of the way, called Dr. Will in, and at that point now you just lean in and go, “What’s happening?” Because at that point you don’t know. Is this a serious injury that might result in him being pulled out, like Matthew had to be pulled out a couple of seasons ago, or is this something you can fix quickly like we did with Stephenie LaGrossa?’

Leung was given a temporary pain reliever called the green whistle before Dr. Will repaired his shoulder.

‘He gave it to Kevin, took a nice deep inhale, and then he quickly popped it in without even really giving Kevin much warning and Kevin went, “Oh, instant relief!” And he appears to be fine. I mean, today’s immunity challenge was really physical and Kevin was right there.’

Ultimately, the medical intervention did not impact the storyline, which led to it being cut from the episode.

‘This first episode is so packed that our very first cut was very long, and you have to get Survivor to time. And so you start asking yourself a series of questions, and the first one is: What can we cut that does not impact the vote? And that’s where your most painful cuts are going to come, but you have to be able to make them.

‘And ultimately, Kevin’s injury didn’t directly impact the Tribal. If Kevin’s voted out, it’s not because of his shoulder. It wasn’t serious enough to impact him that way. So that’s why we removed that scene.’

EW reported that Leung insisted on having his shoulder popped back into place, no matter how much it would hurt.

‘Do it now! Do it now!’ Kevin, who was in excruciating pain, ᴀsserted. ‘I don’t care about the pain. Do it!’

Once Leung was given the green whistle, he was no longer in pain. ‘I feel like heaven,’ he said before his shoulder was repaired.

Leung has since addressed the injury on his own, revealing it took ‘many months’ for him to fully heal.

‘Hey all – wanted to give some context on what happened to me on the Survivor 48 premiere – marooning challenge,’ Leung posted to Instagram, along with a screensH๏τ of him leaning against a pole, clearly in pain.

‘Upon lifting the rope net with my right hand I fell into the mud and my right shoulder completely popped out of my socket, and that’s when I yelled “ow my arm”. I went into full panic mode because of the pain and dislocation that I actually blacked out from me slumped on the ground till the end of the challenge.

‘Right after the challenge ended I yelled out “medical”, and Jeff & Dr. Will ᴀssessed my shoulder. They confirmed it was a torn dislocated shoulder and at the sand, Dr. Will put my shoulder back in the socket. I actually was in so much pain they had to stick a medical kazoo in me to calm me down.

‘Right after they popped my shoulder back in, I immediately went to the “earn your supplies” challenge. And you all saw what happened from there.

‘So yep, I had a fully torn dislocated shoulder and I just didn’t want that to be the end of the survivor journey for me. It took many months to fully recover my shoulder but I just wanted to give it my all and never give up on Survivor.

‘And thank you anyone for listening or reading it. It was hard to experience live but even harder watching on the big screen. But, hey that’s Survivor baby and got to expect the unexpected!

‘Will post more videos and pics of the watch party last night but thank you to @jeffprobst , the medical team, @amikebloomtype and @survivorcbs for helping me through a really rough time!’
