Love It or List It star admits his ‘heart is ripped out’ as he makes emotional admission about daughter amid family struggle for work life balance

A Love It Or List It star made an emotional admission during Wednesday night’s episode as he opened up about the toll of working away from home.

The Channel 4 show sees Phil Spencer and Kirstie Allsopp go head to head as they battle it out to help homeowners decide whether to love or sell their home.

Anne-Marie and Paul were conflicted on whether to sell their property and move to Manchester, where Paul works, or renovate and stay in Milton Keynes.

Paul admitted he works 160 miles away so stays up North for two to three nights a week away from his family.

Opening up about his struggle to obtain a work life balance, he made the heartbreaking admission that his heart is ‘ripped out’ each time he leaves.

He explained: ‘When I’m going up to work, I’ll leave just before the kids go to bed.

His wife Anne-Marie added: ‘When Paul is away I have to hold down the house, still do my full time job, drop off the kids where they need to be, walk the dogs so I am trying to fit this all in.’

The couple bought their 1920s three-bedroom home six years ago, right before the arrival of their first child. The property was a doer-upper but was still yet to be done up.

And by the end of Wednesday’s episode, despite an impressive transformation on the house the pair had decided to list it as they realised moving up to Manchester was a more practical decision for the family.

Paul explained: ‘The reality is I work really far away, it does impact family life. I want to spend more time with the kids.

‘The opportunity I have up in Manchester is a great opportunity, so hopefully we are going to close that gap and make that a bit more manageable.’

However despite the emotional admission, viewers slammed the couple as ‘disorganised’ as they took to Twitter to share their scathing thoughts.

Fans of the show couldn’t help but notice how ‘messy’ the house was during Kirstie and Phil’s first visit, and said ‘tidying and painting’ would transform the house without any major renovations.

One wrote: ‘If they chucked out all the rubbish and tat in every room, gave the place a lick of paint and bought some decent furniture, the house would look so much better for a few thousand’

‘I never understand people who are happy to show on TV the dirt and clutter in their home. I’d get professional cleaners in first’

‘Another episode making me seethe with rage. House a complete tip, so disorganised and bloody toys in every room. There’s just no need to live in such a mess. Hire a skip’

The value of their Milton Keynes home before renovations was £468k, and after £54k worth of work it was valued at £523k.
