Grime Gran steals the spotlight! Social media star Margaret, 86, mingles with fashion and football’s finest at Burberry show

She rose to fame as the subject of hilarious pranks and clips posted by her grandson.

And while mingling with some of fashion’s biggest names, Grime Gran became the surprise draw at Monday’s London Fashion Week, as she attended the star-studded Burberry show.

With her grandson Beau The Beard in tow, the social media star, whose real name is Margaret Keefe, appeared in a string of Instagram snaps at the event, while posing with footballer Rio Ferdinand and rapper Kano.

Margaret became a viral star in 2019 when she began filming interviews with some of grime’s biggest names, before they were posted by her grandson on YouTube.

And since then then she has also appeared in fun Instagram clips both on her own social account, and published by her grandson Beau on his page.

In the gallery of snaps shared from the show, Margaret was dressed in a chic black dress and a green Burberry scarf as she and her grandson posed on the steps outside the Tate Britain Gallery.

Despite needing a helping hand up the steps, she appeared to be the unlikely draw for some guests in attendance, with Rio posing for a playful snap with her.

The post was captioned: ‘Thank you @burberry for inviting us! What an experience! Up The Burbs.’

In the final video of the post, Margaret was asked whether she’d enjoyed the evening.

She said: ‘It was a nice experience, something you don’t expect, especially at my time of life so yeah we did enjoy it.’

Margaret is an east Londoner and found social media fame by interviewing grime rappers in her living room for videos posted by her grandson on YouTube.

The award nominated YouTuber also recently went for a ride in the Rolls-Royce belonging to Lethal Bizzle, before settling down for a cuppa.

Speaking to The Times, the YouTube sensation described one grime artist Lethal B as a ‘gentleman’ and said ‘they all are’.

Her notoriety started through her grandson Roony Keefe who is known in the industry as Risky Roadz.

In the early 2000s he was filming grime artists, charting their rise to fame.

Many of the names which stand tall in the industry today cut their teeth by answering questions from Margaret on her sofa.

Keefe noticed his grandmother was easily able to build a rapport with the rappers, despite the genre which is similar to US hip hop and takes odes from UK electronica, having been a relatively recent phenomena on the UK music scene.

He said: ‘She’s been encouraging and supporting all of us right from the beginning.

‘She’s got a relationship with all the artists. She’s an 80-year-old woman, and she has a relationship with my friends. It’s a nice thing to see.’

Keefe would film the chats with the stars in which they would often discuss their career ambitions, to which Margaret would offer her candid opinions.

She once told the rapper Devlin to ‘take a couple of birds’ on holiday with him reᴀssuring him that they ‘make a holiday’. While she has also previously described Skepta as the ‘greatest MC of all time’.

During the Covid lockdown, Margaret also found a wider audience when she recorded a rant video complaining about stockpiling, that saw her invited on shows such as This Morning.

She recently told Yahoo: ‘Fame hasn’t changed me. I’m still just Margie from Bethnal Green. I’ve always had time for the young ones — whether they’re hanging about outside or coming by for a chat. I don’t shout or moan at them.

‘I’ll say, ”Keep the noise down, lads,” and they’ll listen — they’re all lovely, always checking in to see if I need anything…

‘I might have become Grime Gran by accident, but I’m still the same Margie — Nan to everyone who needs one, a voice for Bethnal Green, and someone who’ll always tell it like it is.’
