BBC’s most-watched drama ‘shelved’ in shock move after star confirms they’ve quit show to ‘take a leap of faith’

A legendary BBC drama will be ‘pulled from screens for a break’ H๏τ on the heels of a star quitting the show.

Call The Midwife first aired in 2012 and has since put out 14 series, totalling to more than 100 episodes following the nurses and nuns in Poplar.

However, the longstanding drama may take a break from production in the future according to the show’s creator, Heidi Thomas.

She told Radio Times: ‘Those of us who are most invested with the show, cast and producers alike, who have been there since the beginning, it is our lives.

‘I don’t believe Call the Midwife will ever end. But I do think we might take a break at some point.’

The screenwriter added that there was an ‘ongoing conversation’ each year where they discuss if there is an ‘end point’ to the show and what they want to ‘work towards’.

‘So if we do take a break, it will be with a view to looking at other aspects of Call the Midwife,’ Heidi explained, before hinting that a spin-off may be on the cards too.

It comes as Call The Midwife star Megan Cusack, who plays Nurse Nancy Corrigan, has revealed she is quitting the show after four years.

During last year’s Christmas special episode, she moved to Surrey with Roger, played by Conor O’Donnell and has been absent from recent instalments.

It has not been confirmed how or when Nancy will exit the show, but Megan shared how it feels ‘bittersweet’.

‘Sometimes, you’ve got to step out of your comfort zone to grow,’ She told Radio Times. ‘I’ve learnt so much, but I’m at the start of my career and I need to take a leap of faith.’

Sunday’s upcoming episode suggests Megan might be making an appearance with the synopsis describing how ‘Nancy’s wedding plans take a surprising turn’.

Another Call The Midwife star, Olly Rix, 39, recently joined BBC medical drama Casualty.

He previously played Matthew Aylward in the period drama who left to go to New York.

Olly’s character married Nurse Trixie Franklin, played by Helen George, in season 12 of the show.

Speaking of his new role, Olly described his excitement for viewers to meet the new addition.

He said: ‘It’s been a pleasure to join the Casualty cast in such a dynamic role. Flynn crashes into the world of it from a very different background, resulting in a complex and exciting story in Internal Affairs and beyond.

‘It’s a brilliant new chapter for the show and I am excited for the audience to get to know Flynn.’

Call The Midwife airs on Sundays on BBC One and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
