The Baldwins viewers roast Boston-born Hilaria as she defends Spanish accent and being ‘raised bilingual’ in the series premiere

TLC debuted their highly-anticipated reality series The Baldwins on Sunday night, which follows the complex family life of Alec and Hilaria Baldwin.

The 66-year-old actor and 41-year-old yoga instructor started dating in August 2011 and tied the knot in June 2012, sharing seven children together – Carmen, 11, Rafael, 9, Leonardo, 8, Romeo, 6, Eduardo, 4, Maria, 3, and Ilaria, 2, along with Alec’s 29-year-old daughter Ireland, from his marriage to Kim Basinger.

The new series follows the bustling family’s life in New York City, including the actor’s trial for the killing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his movie Rust.

His wife Hilaria has caused controversy in the past by using a Spanish accent at times and English at other times, and for claiming to be born in Majorca, Spain when she was actually born in Boston.

She does this in the show as well, revealing that she’s ‘raising my kids to be bi-lingual,’ adding that her ‘nuclear family now lives over in Spain.’

Many fans called out Hilaria on social, nearly five years after a social media user pointed out her ‘grift’ as a Spanish person when she was actually born in the United States.

Halfway through the premiere episode, Alec and Hilaria were in a dual confession, talking about their pre-nuptial agreement when Alec became annoyed.

‘Let’s talk slower. Let’s talk slower. You’re speaking English in a Spanish cadence, which is always perilous for me. Slow down, just a kiss. I can’t understand you,’ he said.

The show then featured various headlines about Hilaria’s accent, before showing her using Spanish with her kids, including young Eduardo, a.k.a. ‘Edu.’

‘I’m raising my kids to be bilingual. I was raised bilingual. My family, all my nuclear family now lives over in Spain,’ Hilaria says, before the show her speaking both Spanish and English in back-to-back sentences.

‘I want to teach my kids pride in speaking more than one language. I think just growing up and speaking two languages, is extremely special,’ she added.

Hilaria insisted, ‘Love English. I also love Spanish. And when I mix the two, it doesn’t make me inauthentic. When I mix the two, that makes me normal.’

She also admitted of the controversy over her accent, ‘I’d be lying if I… …Said it didn’t make me sad and it didn’t hurt, and it didn’t put me in dark places.’

‘But it was my family, my friends, my community, who speak multiple languages, who have belonging in multiple places and realize that we are a mix of all these different things, and that’s going to have an impact on how we sound and an impact on how we articulate things and the words that we choose and our mannerisms. That’s normal. That’s called being human,’ she added.

Many fans called out Hilaria, including @jenjihere, who hadn’t forgotten all of the controversy surrounding Hilaria four years earlier.

‘So, we’re just gonna act like Hilaria didn’t try to fool everyone into thinking that she was a Spanish woman from Spain a few years ago and got busted and called out for being from Boston & faking an accent? Now the accent is gone? Not gonna mention that?’ the X user said.

REALI-TEA QUEEN (@2Chingylover17) said, ‘Im very intrigued to know why the children all have ethnically spanish names and spelling #TheBaldwins.

Jenji added, ‘Alec: “slow down. You’re speaking English too fast in a Spanish cadence and it’s perilous for me,”‘ along with a cry-laughing emoji.

In an Instagram video in 2021, Hilaria defended her behavior, claiming that while she was born in Boston, she spent ‘some of’ her childhood in Spain and ‘some’ of it in Mᴀssachusetts.

‘There was a lot of back and forth my entire life,’ she said. ‘I’m really lucky that I grew up speaking two different languages and I’m trying to raise my kids, so they speak two languages too.

‘And that’s something very important to me especially having my family abroad.’

Records show that Hilaria’s parents, attorney David Thomas and Harvard Medical School professor Kathryn Hayward, bought a $4 million five-bedroom, five-bath house in Boston’s Beacon Hill area in June 1987 when Hilaria was just three and didn’t move out until she had turned 28.

Neighbors there remembered her as a ‘very enтιтled young lady.’ What they had no recollection of was any Spanish accent.
