Ed Sheeran reunites with old friend Rupert Grint as pair attend Ipswich Town game against Tottenham

Ed Sheeran was spotted in the crowds at Ipswich Town stadium alongside Rupert Grint on Saturday as the pair watched the game against Tottenham.

The musician and actor have been long term friends since Rupert, 36, appeared in Sheeran’s, 34, music video for Lego House back in 2011.

The pair are constantly mistaken for one another by fans and even other celebrities, which inspired Ed’s idea to have Rupert appear in the music video.

In 2017 the actor, famously known for his role in the Harry Potter franchise as Ron Weasley, told James Corden ‘it’s kinda 50/50 now. It’s like if someone stops me, it could go either way. I could be Ed or I could be me’.

Whilst appearing on The Late Late Show, Rupert revealed that 70s music icon Leo Sayer also mistook him for the award winning music artist, he said: ‘Leo Sayer, he came up to me and he said ‘he loved my music’, of course thinking I was Ed. I just, yeah, I play along’.

Rupert is a lifelong Spurs fan so would have been delighted that the final result ended with Tottenham winning 4-1.

In August 2024 Ed purchased a minority share in the Ipswich football team after being a beloved fan since he was young.

During a press release at the time, he revealed that no matter where he is travelling Suffolk and Ipswich always feel like home to him, he said: ‘I have lived in Suffolk since I was three years old and, while I travel the world and sometimes feel like an outsider in big cities, Suffolk and Ipswich have always made me feel part of the community and protected.

‘It’s such a joy to be a fan of Ipswich Town.

‘I’m not a voting shareholder or a board member, this is just me putting some money into the club I love and them returning the gesture, so please don’t get onto me with signing suggestions or tactics to play!’

Last month, Ed made history history as the first international artist to perform in Bhutan.

The songwriter hailed it a privilege to perform at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu and praised the ‘incredible’ fans from the South Asian country who had turned out to see him play and made him and his team feel so welcome.

‘Had the honour to be the first ever international artist to play Bhutan last night. what a gig, what a country, what a beautiful place with incredible people. lemme know if i can move there, please and thank you,’ he captioned a video on Instagram, which showed footage from his trip and performance.

The Perfect hitmaker: ‘And also thank you so much for welcoming me and my touring crew, and for every volunteer who helped put on such a historic show. hopefully see you again soon!’

In the video, Ed reflected on how wild it was to be breaking a record.

Standing by the stage set-up, he reflected: ‘It’s mad that this is the first international concert here. I hope that there’s many more to come.’

The father-of two had been welcomed to the country by King Jigme Khesar and Queen Jetsun Pema.

He added: ‘I went for dinner with the king and queen yesterday and they said, ‘We just want people coming to the country that want to love and respect the country and understand the ideals.’

‘Yeah, I feel super honoured that I was chosen and I can’t wait to play. This is like such my jam.’

The video then cut to footage from the concert, with the ‘Castle on the Hill’ singer telling the audience how proud he felt to perform for them.

He said: ‘I’ve been all around the world, been to some amazing places, but I’ve never done anything like this before.

‘To be able to visit a country like Bhutan, to be able to stand onstage and bring this show here. I can remember playing to an empty room and now I get to play the first international concert in Bhutan — ever.’

Last year, Ed was named the most played artist in the United Kingdom for the seventh year, having sold more than 150 million records across the world since his emergence with debut album + in 2011.
