Matt Tebʙuтт suggests Naga Munchetty to be ‘cut off’ after awkward on-air clash

BBC Breakfast presenters Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt found themselves in an awkward exchange with Saturday Kitchen host Matt Tebʙuтт during a live crossover.

During Saturday’s instalment of the programme, British chef and TV host Matt, 51, confirmed that Irish author Marian Keyes would be appearing on his show.

However, Naga, 49, took a swipe at Matt, claiming that ‘he could have prepared better,’ leading to an awkward moment.

When Matt asked if Naga if she had any questions for Marian, the presenter replied: ‘I just think you could have prepared better, Matt.’

Matt defended himself, saying, ‘I mean, this is not a time to critique me’, but Naga continued her critique, pointing out the absence of references to Keyes’ books in the studio.

Matt then interrupted, saying they did have sushi in the studio, referencing Keyes’ book Sushi for Beginners, before adding ‘So, in your face.’

After some cheering from the Saturday Kitchen team, Naga pointed out another missed reference, prompting Matt to jokingly ask: ‘Can we cut her off now?’

The camera then returned to the BBC Breakfast studio, where Charlie, 62, quipped to Naga: ‘He’s laughing on the outside.’

Earlier in the show, Charlie had to abruptly end his interview with former UK ambᴀssador to Ukraine, Simon Smith, due to breaking news, reports The Mirror.

Charlie cut in with the emergency update: ‘Simon, I appreciate your time this morning and your expertise and I apologise for interrupting you but we’ve got to go straight to Gaza where the latest handover of the hostages looks like is about to begin.’

The main story of the day was the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel.

Hamas released six more hostages held in Gaza, in exchange for 602 Palestinian prisoners who were to be freed later on Saturday, according to BBC reports.

The released hostages included four kidnapped during the October 7 2023 Hamas attack on Israel – Tal Shoham, Omer Shem Tov, Eliya Cohen, and Omer Wenkert.

The two other men freed, Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, had been held in Gaza for years – Mengistu since 2014 and al-Sayed since 2015.

These six are the last hostages to be returned as part of the first phase of a ceasefire deal, which is set to end next Saturday.

Israel and Hamas have yet to agree on the terms for the second phase.

Hamas began releasing hostages, facilitated by the Red Cross, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in January.

BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am, while Saturday Kitchen airs weekly at 9.30am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
