She is Laura Dern, 58.

Laura’s famous parents are Diane Ladd, 89, who was on the TV show Alice, and Bruce Dern, 88, who was in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight.

Her godmother was actress Shelley Winters of The Poseidon Adventure fame. 

Laura made a splash in the 1991 film Rambling Rose and was also in two David Lynch movies: Wild At Heart with Nicolas Cage and Blue Velvet with Isabella Rossellini.

One of her more recent successes is the series Big Little Lies with Kidman and Witherspoon.

Her first acting role was with Jodie Foster in the 1980 film Foxes. In 1985, she landed a key role in the film Smooth Talk which gave her a big break.

Then came the acclaimed films Mask, Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart. 

She had a blockbuster on her hands when she played Ellie Sattler in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 dinosaur film Jurᴀssic Park.

Then came Clint Eastwood’s film A Perfect World and Citizen Ruth.

In 1997, Dern was asked by Ellen DeGeneres to guest star as Susan Richmond, a lesbian who helps her character, Ellen Morgan, come out of the close.

DeGeneres herself came out at the same time in real life.

There was fallout over the move as some fans did not like the character. Laura did not work for more than a year after that.

She bounced back with October Sky opposite Jake Gyllenhaal then she did Dr. T & the Women.

In 2006, Dern reunited with director David Lynch for the third time on Inland Empire which had no script. There were mixed reviews.

That same year, Dern had a supporting role in Lonely Hearts.

In 2008, Dern starred in Recount then she was in Tenderness, Little Fockers, The Master and Wild.

Then came the monster hit of Big Little Lies.

She played tough business woman Renata Klein which won her a first Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.

Next was a role in Star Wars.

She starred as stoic Vice-Admiral Amilyn Holdo in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

In 2022, Dern reprised her role as Dr. Ellie Sattler in Jurᴀssic World Dominion.

Dern dated her Blue Velvet co-star Kyle MacLachlan from 1985 to 1989. 

She began a romance with Jeff Goldblum in 1993 while filming Jurᴀssic Park, but the relationship ended in 1997. 

Dern also dated Billy Bob Thornton from 1997 to 1999. They were engaged until she discovered he was dating Angelina Jolie.

In autumn 2000, Dern began dating musician Ben Harper; they married on December 23, 2005, at their home in Los Angeles.

They have two children together, son Ellery Walker and daughter Jaya.
