This Morning viewers left ‘raging and sickened’ by ‘horrific’ footage of pensioner being abused in care home – seething ‘if that was my mum there would be bloodshed’

This Morning viewers were left ‘raging and sickened’ bu the ‘horrific’ footage of a pensioner being abused in a care home brought to the show on Thursday.

Guest Clare Miller and Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey joined Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary on the sofa to discuss the quality of care in care homes.

Ed is a carer for disabled son John and has previously looked after his sick mum.

The politician wants to make a change in the care system and said that he wants to get the Care Quality Commission ‘in the right place’.

Ed said: ‘It’s about making sure we improve the quality of carers to make sure all of them are really good, and route out the bad apples.’

One person who strongly agreed is Clare – and she had her own harrowing experience to share.

This Morning shared some distressing clips that Clare and her brother managed to record while her mum Ann was staying at Grange care home in Surrey three years ago.

One clip showed Ann being roughly moved around in bed as she pleaded with the staff to stop.

In another they goad her by dangling her belongings in front of her, before swearing at her and jeering.

Many took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their heartbreak and frustration over what they saw.

One wrote on the platform: ‘I’m fed up of seeing sick & twisted so called “carers” literally terrorising, bullying and manhandling disabled patients in care homes. It happens in mental wards too. It’s common and it’s sickening. I don’t wish bad on people but I hope these culprits go to hell.’

Another questioned: ‘How are these people getting through a dbs check #ThisMorning.’

A third pointed out: ‘That is horrific #thismorning

A fourth said: ‘The clip of carers abusing that poor lady whilst they’re paid to CARE for her makes me rage. If that was my mum there would be bloody scenes in that hell hole.’

‘If someone treated my nanna like that, omfg I can’t even think about it!!,’ a fifth confessed.

A sixth fumed: ‘that is so f***ing distressing to watch, horrific.’

A seventh tweeted: ‘Just awful. #thismorning.’

‘No words!,’ an eighth simply added.

Clare and her brother took their time researching potential homes that they wanted their mum Ann to live in, after she started to struggle living at her own home.

She explained: ‘The first moment we realised something was really not right was when my brother found a carer on the floor and our mum was absolutely terrified.’

She continued: ‘He left the room fairly quickly.

‘We’d already had problems, we’d gone to the authorities, we’d gone to the council, a safeguarding investigation was put in. This was the icing on the cake.

‘We weren’t getting any honest answers from the home.

‘They were hiding, denying and lying about things.

‘We just knew there was something.’

Clare decided to put a camera in her room and after settling her mum somewhere else, they discovered what had been going on when they weren’t around.

She said: ‘It broke my heart, I will never forget it.’

Both Ed and Clare believe that having a registration for carers is important so that the quality of care is to the same standard for everyone.

Claire explained that the cleaner involved was given a community resolution order, two members of staff resigned, another two were sacked, and one member of staff was re-trained.

Alison read out a statement from a spokesperson from Grange care home which stated: ‘The behaviour of the individuals involved in Mrs King’s care three years ago was reprehensible a nd does not reflect our high standards.

‘We have since implemented significant reforms to ensure that families and care providers alike are protected from the actions of rogue individuals.’

This Morning airs from 10am weekdays on ITV and is available to stream on ITVX.
