Award-winning BBC drama returning to screens next year for ‘most high-stakes series yet’ in huge win for fans

In a huge win for fans, an award-winning BBC drama is set to return to screens for the ‘most high-stakes series yet’.

Filming for the hit series Vigil is due to begin later this year in Scotland, with the third instalment of the police show airing in 2026.

The Emmy-winning programme stars Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie as DCI Amy Silva and DI Kirsten Longacre.

It follows the two detectives as they tackle a case at a remote Arctic research station where a member of a British special forces mission was killed.

Nominated for a BAFTA in 2022, the new series is set to be packed full of action and cast members are buzzing to begin production.

Rose said: ‘I can’t wait to get stuck into another season of Vigil, to work with the wonderful Suranne Jones again and our brilliant crew.

‘And this time, Kirsten will get to pack her bags and join Amy on what’s set to be Vigil’s most high-stakes mission yet!’

While Suranne added: ‘I can’t wait to return to Vigil series three, see our brilliant team in Scotland and work with Rose again. I’m sure it will be a thrill of a ride.’

The show’s writer, Tom Edge, described the ‘epic investigation that shines a light on issues that will shape the world we all live in’.

He said: ‘I’m delighted that Suranne and Rose are returning for a new adventure. In our third season we travel to the frozen north where the world’s great powers are competing to secure advantages as the ice melts.

‘With a brilliant cast and crew ᴀssembling to make the show, we hope to deliver an epic investigation that shines a light on issues that will shape the world we all live in.’

Vigil was named the most-viewed drama in three years back in 2021 and drew an audience of 13.4 million for its first episode.

In 2023, actress Suranne shared that she was looking forward to working on projects that involve her being behind the camera in future.

She and her husband, former magazine editor Laurence Akers, run a production company together called TeamAkers Productions Ltd.

The star explained: ‘Me and my husband, we set up our production company and made Maryland and we just made our first documentary.

‘We just got two commissions that will go into production next year.

‘I love it. I’m hoping to eventually make projects that I’m not in. I can have a couple of tea and chill.

‘It would be good to not do everything. But I’m very excited about our projects next year.’

Both series of Vigil can be streamed on BBC iPlayer now.
