The Repair Shop fans left ‘bawling’ as tearful man says ‘I can see my dad again’ after his flat cap is restored – with a poignant hidden detail

The Repair Shop fans were left ‘bawling’ after a tearful man felt reconnected to his late father when his flat cap was restored.

Mick Harper, from Gloucester, featured on the BBC show on Wednesday and asked expert Jayesh Vaghela to fix his father’s tweed hat.

His father, Bill, pᴀssed away when Mick was only 21 years old and he was 56.

The cap is the only belonging Mick has to remember him by, aside from a handful of pH๏τos.

Bill was a bricklayer and used to wear the hat to work every day, to the point that is was described as ‘part of him really’.

It holds fond memories for Mick from his childhood and means ‘everything’ to him, he explained.

‘There’s a lot of memories with it, when he’d come in laughing, joking chucking his hat on the side, sometimes he’d chuck it on my head when I was little,’ he said.

When the hat was restored, it made Mick feel connected to his father again in an emotional moment on the show – and a poignant detail was added.

Recalling his times with his father, Mick described how he, ‘could be very strict but he used to come in every Friday after work with a bag of sweets for us, it was a real treat’.

Mick’s mother pᴀssed away three years ago and his brother found the hat among her belongings when he was clearing out the house, and gifted it to Mick for his 60th birthday.

‘Because it was his, and I haven’t got anything of my dad’s, I want to wear it myself,’ he said.

When presented with the hat, Mick discovered that the experts at The Repair Shop had embroidered ‘Bill’s cap’ on the inside and burst into tears.

‘It’s amazing, thank you, and I like Bill’s cap, thank you very much,’ he said tearfully.

‘This is like seeing me dad when I was 21 again, just that feeling that he’s here and with me, it’s part of him and it’s now, in my eyes it’s part of me.’

The emotional scene touched viewers of the show too, and some took to social media to express their thoughts.

Back in November, The Repair Shop left fans in floods of tears as a guest revealed the heart-wrenching reason she needed her cherished family heirloom restored urgently.

Wendy Bray presented hosts of the BBC show Suzie and Steve Fletcher with her late mother’s old leather writing case, which held a lot of sentimental value, but was in need of TLC.

She explained that her mother was gifted the case by her parents when she left home at 17 and then went on to use it to write letters home when she served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force during the war – always using blue paper.

Her mother had signed the Official Secrets Act, which meant she couldn’t discuss her role in the war until the late 1970s.

Wendy said: ‘So much love has gone into that, so many letters home were written from that and it seems such a a shame that it’s in this state now really.’

She told Suzie and Steve that her wish was to see the writing case restored to its former glory so that it looked the same as it did when she saw her her mother use it as a child.

However, Wendy revealed the tragic reason why she needed them to repair the heirloom so urgently.

She said: ‘I want to give this to my daughter for my granddaughter. I need to do this fairly soon because I’ve got stage four cancer.

‘So, although it’s hard for me to believe, sitting here, probably as hard as it is for you to believe looking at me! I’ve only got about four or five months left.

‘So, I want to do this, so that it’s done for her. To be something that I’ve given my daughter to give to my granddaughter that reminds her not only of me but of her great-granny.’

The Repair Shop is available to watch on BBC One and iPlayer.
