Chelsea Handler recently sparked curiosity after dishing about her ‘very toxic’ relationship with an unnamed ex-boyfriend on the Call Her Daddy podcast.
The comedian, 49, told host Alex Cooper that she was the ‘worst version of [herself]’ in that relationship and revealed the ‘unhinged thing’ she did when they broke up.
While she never name-dropped the ex in the interview, a source told Page Six on Wednesday that Handler was referring to her past romance with successful H๏τelier, André Balazs, 68.
She and Balazs — who has a net worth of $700million and owns the iconic Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, among other global H๏τspots — dated on/off from 2011 to 2013.
DailyMail.com has reached out to Handler’s representatives for comment.
‘We had a very toxic [relationship]. Like I would look through his phone… he would be out ’til all hours, I would be paranoid about it,’ she told Cooper of her relationship with the anonymous suitor on last week’s Call Her Daddy episode.
Handler — who recently hosted the Critics Choice Awards — added: ‘It was the worst version of me.’

‘I knew I had to break up with him, but I wanted him to really feel it,’ the Grammy Award nominee told Cooper.

Handler said that she imported ’35 linden trees’ and lined the driveway of her ex’s Upstate New York estate with them so he’d always be reminded of her when the leaves changed.
Page Six pointed out that Handler’s ex-boyfriend Balazs happens to own the Locusts-on-Hudson, which is a famous 76-acre estate in Staatsburg, New York.
The lavish property, which has a fully operating farm, is located along the Hudson River, which was another hint Handler dropped in her Call Her Daddy sit-down.
‘He had this huge drive that led up to his estate and I bought him 35 linden trees that I’m pretty sure I imported from Germany. Very extravagant,’ she explained.
‘I had 17 put on either side of his driveway, so that you drive under this allée of trees. The leaves would change and bloom, and it would be beautiful.’
Handler said that her ‘unhinged’ gesture worked because her ex-boyfriend still texts her twice a year like clockwork.

‘Every fall and every spring, I get a text from him saying, ‘I can’t believe I lost you. Do you want to come and see your trees?” Handler said. ‘And I say, ‘I’m not interested.”
Handler began her on/off romance with Balazs in 2011 after her two-month fling with rapper 50 Cent, 49.
Balazs is a renown H๏τel magnate who runs the Standard H๏τels, the famed Chateau Marmont and London’s Chiltern Firehouse.
He is the CEO of André Balazs Properties and was previously married to Ford Models CEO Katie Ford from 1985 to 2004. The exes share two children.
Handler and Balazs attended the 2012 Met Gala together among other A-list red carpet events during their two-year romance.
Handler gushed over how in ‘love’ she was with Balazs during a February 2013 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
‘We can talk about my boyfriend?’ the Chelsea Lately star asked host DeGeneres. ‘I love him. He’s the best.’
She then confessed that their relationship was ‘very rocky.’

‘We were talking about living our lives together, my boyfriend and I. We’ve broken up a couple of times and gotten back together, and we’re trying to figure out how to live a life together,’ she explained to Oprah at the time.
She also revealed that their bi-coastal romance — with NY-based Balazs traveling the globe for work and Handler doing comedy in LA — had become ‘so taxing.’
‘But when you really want to be with someone, you can make that work, but you don’t want it to be uneven,’ she explained.
‘If I’m going to London for you for a week for business, and having to go out to dinner and drinks and be funny and engaging, then you better hit me back.’
By October 2013, Handler confirmed on an episode of her E! talk-show Chelsea Lately that her and Balazs had officially split.
‘Maybe I’ll start dating a b***h,’ she joked while chatting with Mary McCormack. ‘That totally would be something I would do, is date a woman.’
‘We had a very toxic [relationship]. Like I would look through his phone… he would be out ’til all hours, I would be paranoid about it,’ Handler told Cooper of her relationship with the anonymous suitor on last week’s Call Her Daddy episode
Handler’s last serious relationship was with fellow comedian Jo Koy. The pair got together in 2021 after over a decade of friendship but broke up in July 2022.
She discussed the heartbreaking split during her recent Call Her Daddy appearance.
Handler, who said she ‘did not want to break up’ with him, ultimately decided to choose herself and not compromise her values or her future for Koy.
‘What I thought a mature healthy relationship and what he thought was a mature healthy relationship were two different things and I would have had to compromise everything I stand for and I wasn’t willing to do that,’ she said on the podcast.
She called Jo’s expectations for her as his girlfriend were very ‘outdated, old-fashioned and not going to work,’ adding that it was obvious that they ‘had different ideas about togetherness.
Chelsea said on the podcast: ‘I felt like it was a decision between having a relationship and being full-on or choosing myself and my sanity – sanity is an overstatement – but I would have compromised my own value system.
Chelsea reflected on how their relationship changed her confidence level as well as her ability to be vulnerable.
‘The biggest takeaway from that relationship was A, that I was able to be in love again in a vulnerable, mature, healthy way and then when I realized it wasn’t going to work out I was able to end it in a healthy, mature way and not divulge all the stuff and the ugliness that may have happened in between because I didn’t want to focus on that,’ she said.
In the same interview, Handler also discussed her breakup with fellow comedian Jo Koy in 2022
The comedian said that she also learned that she is ‘capable of accepting love’ and was ‘reminded of’ her strength and power of who she is.’
Chelsea said he helped reinstall that in her, during a time in which she had lost interest in her job.
The biggest takeaway for her was that she was ‘capable of accepting love’ and ‘being vulnerable’ in a relationship.
She said she was ‘really in love’ with Jo, and was very ‘happy,’ but that she had to call it quits due to their different values.
