The One Show in ‘pure chaos’ as David Walliams leaves Alex Jones squirming with dig at Keir Starmer live on air – and fans gasp ‘he’s too outspoken for the BBC!’

David Walliams left Alex Jones squirming with a dig at Keir Starmer live on air on The One Show.

The BBC evening programme saw hosts Alex Jones, 47, and Clara Amfo, 40, welcome the comedian, 53, Little Britain actor Matt Lucas, 50, and Lindsey Coulsen from EastEnders, 64.

During a conversation about school, led by Lindsey’s new role in Waterloo Road, David made a quip about the Prime Minister.

He said: ‘I was at school with, Keir Starmer. And he gave me a detention and it was Christmas time and it was really cold and he turned off the heating.’

David then burst into laughter, while presenter Alex looked stunned and turned towards her co-host Clara.

He added: ‘I did go to the same school as Keir Starmer, but actually we didn’t meet each other.’

David quipped ‘And Fatboy Slim was there too. He was, yeah!. He was doing the DJing and Keir was being the Prime Minister, I was acting the giddy goat.’

Viewers of the show took to social media to share their reaction to the conversation.

One posted on X: ‘Loved David’s dig at Keir Starmer. He’s clearly far too outspoken for the BBC. He’s probably next to be cancelled. #theoneshow #oneshow.’

‘#theoneshow that was pure chaos lol.’; ‘David Walliams said he went to the same school with keir starmer and was held in detention and turned off the heating as punishment…. HA HA HA HA! #TheOneShow.’

‘Watching the presenters on #TheOneShow totally not getting make a joke about going to school with Kier Starmer and giving them a detention and turning the heating off. Don’t which was funnier.’; ‘David Walliams, as hilarious as ever #theoneshow.’

‘#TheOneShow producer panicking to think of a way to balance out Walliams’s Keir Starmer heating joke before the end of the show.’

David’s comment was a reference to the government making cuts to the winter fuel allowance last year.

Many pensioners were stripped of the allowance after the eligibility requirements changed.

Winter 2024 marked the first time the benefit – first rolled out by the Blair government in 1997 – has been means-tested, depriving an estimated 10 million pensioners of additional help with their heating bills.

Earlier this week The One Show was blasted for ‘keeping football fans waiting’ after the fifth-round draw took place live.

One moaned on the social media platform: ‘Jesus Christ just do the draw!!’

Another chimed in: ‘Can’t believe the absolute sh**t I’m sitting through just to see the #facup draw on #TheOneShow Why on earth is the draw for premier domestic cup compeтιтion in the world in the middle of this utter waffle? (I’m fully aware it might have been for years) #avfc.’

After teasing the exciting segment, the presenters went straight into interviewing Sara Cox, Clare Hamilton and Billy Bailey.

A third fumed: ‘Why didn’t they just do the draw first?? Seems bizarre to put it on 10mins into a programme which has no relevance to the cup whatsoever anyway! #TheOneShow #FACupDraw #NUFC #FACup.’

‘Can’t believe I have to sit through the one show for the fa cup draw. Do the draw! #FACup #TheOneShow,’ a fourth said.

A fifth impatiently tweeted: ‘#TheOneShow #FACup Get on with the draw.’

A sixth pointed out: ‘#theoneshow too much faffing lol.’

Another agreed: ‘Aye, just gerron wi it. #theoneshow.’

The live draw finally got underway halfway through the episode.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.
