He is the 21-year-old nepo baby who is about to check into the White Lotus in Thailand for the third series of the hugely popular HBO series.

The actor moved from Britain to the U.S. when he was young after spending his early childhood in Notting Hill, London, before growing up in Brooklyn, New York.

There he attended Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn, where fees cost between $48,000 and $52,000 per year, before earning a place at the prestigious Columbia University.

The rising star made his acting debut in 2013 on the HBO series Doll & Em, where he played the role of Ariel while on the show.

But he earned his nepo-baby stripes because one of the writers on the series was his own mother, an English thespian who married an American screen star.

His mother is best known for her acting and directing work on Lovely & Amazing (2001) and The Newsroom (2012–2014), while his father starred in The Brutalist (2024), American Hustle (2013) and Disobedience (2017).

It’s Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola – and their son Sam’s profile is set to skyrocket following his upcoming appearance in the Mike White directed show.

Speaking about his parents previously to Vogue, Sam said: ‘My parents aren’t, like, total celebrities. They don’t get recognised in the street.’ 

Emily and Alessandro have been together more than 24 years and tied the knot in 2003 after meeting three years prior on the set of Love’s Labour’s Lost.

The couple have two children, both of who have followed their footsteps into the world of TV and film from an early age after completing his first acting job age 11.

They are also parent’s to Sam’s younger sister May, 14, who starred alongside her brother in the apocalyptic black comedy film White Noise in 2022.

The siblings took on on major roles in the adaptation of the 1985 novel by Don DeLillo, which served as the curtain-raiser at the Venice Film Festival that year.

Speaking at the time, White Noise’s director Noah Baumbach said: ‘I have known Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola for years, and admired them tremendously.

‘We were looking for kids and went through audition after audition, and all the callbacks, and these two Nivola kids kept on coming up to the surface. They were just so wonderful.’

Sam starred as Heinrich whilst May played Steffie, their father and the film’s leading character, Prof. Jack Gladney, was played by Adam Driver.

The siblings were previously seen in The Pursuit Of Love, which mother Emily directed for the BBC last year.

Sam has been dating fellow nepo-baby Iris Apatow for the past two years, whose parents are actor Leslie Mann and director Judd Apatow.

In the same chat with Vogue, Sam joked that his cohort of celebrity offspring pals were ‘some secret cabal of nepo kids who hang out in black robes’.

Despite already working with Bradley Cooper in Maestro and Nicole Kidman in the Netflix’s The Perfect Couple, it’s his next project that is likely to send him into stratospheric stardom.

However, Sam admitted he was convinced he wasn’t going to get the job, telling the fashion bible: ‘I’ve never felt more certain that I wasn’t gonna get a part.’
