Their daughters Madelyn and Zoey have both pursued careers in the entertainment industry, with the family collaborating on the 2017 film The Year of Spectacular Men, which marked Lea’s directorial debut, with Madelyn writing and starring in the film, and Zoey also featuring in a leading role.
In December, Thompson, who publicly supported Kamala Harris for president during the 2024 election, was emotional during an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com conducted hours after the vice president lost to Donald Trump.

Thompson said she was ‘scared’ for her daughters and admitted she did not know how to ‘move forward’ in the wake of Trump’s victory.
The actress struggled to fight back tears when asked about her recent criticism of her ex-fiancé Dennis Quaid, 70, who endorsed Trump, 78, at a California rally in October.
‘You recently spoke up about your ex, Dennis Quaid and his ties with Donald Trump,’ she was asked. ‘You’ve been a champion for women forever, yesterday, didn’t work out. How do we move forward from today?’
Thompson fell silent and started to cry before offering the dejected response: ‘I don’t know.’

Struggling to contain her emotions she continued: ‘I don’t know. I’m sorry.’
Asked if there was any reason to be ‘hopeful’ she replied: ‘I don’t feel so hopeful. I feel… scared. I have daughters.
‘I don’t know if it will affect you or me, but I am a mom and know people that have been very affected by having babies that have died.
‘It just, I feel really bad for them. But America’s spoken.’

She continued: ‘We fight the fights. We fight to fight and the battles that we want to carry. It’s just not a lot of fun right now.’
Finishing with a nod to Back to the Future, she joked that America needs a DeLorean – the time travelling machine used by Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox’s Dr Emmett Brown and Marty McFly.
‘We need that,’ she said. ‘We need to get on that.’
She and her husband, who met during the filming of Some Kind of Wonderful, have been for almost 36 years.
