‘I can get quite low’: Newly-single Alesha Dixon reveals she ‘doesn’t feel great about herself’ when she fails to work out and does it to make life feel ‘manageable’

Alesha Dixon has opened up about the impact not working out has on her mental health as she revealed she can get ‘quite low’ in a new interview.

As well as the chat, Alesha showed off the results of her gruelling gym routine by posing for a sizzling pH๏τoshoot in a series of skimpy workout gear.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge, 46, spoke to Women’s Health about how she makes time to exercise to make her life feel more ‘manageable’.

The interview comes a few months after Alesha and her partner Azuka Ononye  announced they had split after 18 years and two children together.

Detailing her reasons for exercising, Alesha said: ‘I look at exercise as like dusting off the cobwebs…I’ve made that connection; if I’m not working out, I can get quite low, don’t feel great about myself, and I can get into a negative mindset.

‘But when I’m consistent with working out, everything’s manageable. It has a ripple effect on all my other choices throughout the day.’

As well as working out, Alesha revealed that she also burns energy by dancing the night away whenever she can on nights out with her friends.

Speaking about her relationship with clubbing and why she can still ‘out-dance a lot of people’, Alesha said: ‘If the music’s playing and I love the music, there’s no shutting me up or sitting me down.

‘Even at the age that I am now, I can out-dance and out-party a lot of people. But I don’t need a packed club to have fun, it could be in a friend’s house, it could be at home.

‘Dancing has always played a major part in my joy…I always call myself an original raver because I’ve always been somebody who loves going out.

‘That’s how I started MC-ing in the first place; I was in these dances or clubs or raves where that energy was just so infectious.’

Alesha joked that sometimes she can get carried away on nights out and will wake up to see her antics on social media the next day.

Admitting she wishes she could go out before the era of phones, she said: ‘Sometimes I just want to go and rave like it’s 2000…I always say to my friends when I go out, if you can’t find me, go to the DJ booth.

‘I’ll be right there. I’m like a magnet towards the microphone and before I know it, I’m on the mic.

‘And then you wake up the next day and it’s all over Instagram and you go, “Oh God”. And it’s fine, but you just want to be in the moment – and then it’s on Instagram Stories.’

Alesha said some of her ‘favourite times’ in clubs were back in the nineties when the DJ was playing her records.

She said: ‘Why? was a mᴀssive club hit and we’d be in the middle of the dance floor raving to our own song and no one knew who we were…

‘I feel like [as] time goes on, the more people respect what we’ve achieved because they realise it’s like lightning in a bottle.

We feel very lucky we were part of something that the UK can say “This is ours”. The US was untouchable when it came to R’n’B but the UK garage scene is British.’

Alesha argued that band’s like Mis-Teeq ‘had to graft more’ back in the day, as opposed to current day artists who can do ‘one interview.

She said: ‘We felt like we won the lottery because we were an unknown band just grafting and still so young. In our day, you had to put in more graft.

‘Now an artist can do one interview and seed it out to the world. Back then, you’d have to go to every single radio station, you’d have to do every TV show, which is why we never had a life.’

During her relationship with Azuka, the former couple welcomed two daughters, Azura Sienna, 11, and Anaya Safiya, five.

Following their separation, they claimed they were ‘committed to co-parenting harmoniously’ and focusing on maintaining a positive environment for their family.

Elsewhere in the chat, Alesha revealed why she’s aiming to delay the introduction of phones to her daughters for as long as possible.

She said: ‘As long as we can avoid our daughters having phones, we’re going try our hardest. Azura can be begging me for a mobile phone and I feel no way to be like ‘nope’ because I’ve got one. [But] you’ve got to be strong with it.

‘My thing is this: if she doesn’t need a phone then why is she having one? If I can delay her being in that world, I’m going to work super hard to make sure that it doesn’t happen. I don’t care if her friends have got phones. In our house, we don’t want that.’
