As Netflix prepares to launch the trailer for their new docuseries on Victoria Beckham, how much of her private family life will she reveal to win over the States?

When Harper Beckham took to the stage in her first public appearance to present her mother with an award, she was flanked by a huge camera crew.

Having been dropped off by her doting father David, the 13-year-old was guest of honour at the glossy magazine Harper’s Bazaar annual Women of the Year event in November, where Victoria was to receive a prestigious award for entrepreneurship.

There was absolutely no way such a ‘Brand Beckham’ moment was going to go by without being rinsed to the absolute max.

A love-in between mum and daughter followed in front of a star-studded audience at London’s Claridge’s H๏τel, which was captured by Netflix’s cameras for her forthcoming documentary, which is already the subject of much chatter in Hollywood.

The former Posh Spice turned fashion designer has been keen to crack the American market for several years, and who should be her secret weapon? Harper, of course.

After being kept artfully under wraps for years, while the Beckhams’ older three children promoted their own careers: Brooklyn 24, as a pH๏τographer turned cook, Romeo, 22 a footballer turned model and Cruz, 19 as a musician, Harper’s introduction to the ‘firm’ has been much anticipated.

‘There has been this long running fear that she will end up like Paris Hilton if she isn’t looked after properly. Of course they have protected her,’ says a source.

‘This show is Victoria’s big hope of cracking America and becoming a household name and it will be done with a little help from Harper who will be launched on the world stage.

‘Harper won over loads of fans at Claridge’s, she was the star of the night and there is no doubt that she will be the star of her mum’s documentary too. Victoria is a super bright woman when it comes to brands and selling herself, she has been doing that for more than 25 years.

‘Now it’s time for Harper to shine, Victoria knows that people will be talking non-stop about her: it’s kind of the USP of the show. The world will get to know their only daughter.

‘She has been watching from the sidelines while the Beckhams’ millions of fans have been following her growing up on Instagram.’

The question is, however, just how much of the family’s private lives will Victoria, 50, share?

While Harper and her siblings will not be interviewed for the programme (that will be left for dad David), pre-recorded footage of them will be shared.

Last year Harper joined her parents for the launch of Victoria’s new perfume, My Reverie, in Paris. During the trip Victoria revealed her daughter’s plea to become a master of a brand, just like her parents – an affirmation Harper wrote on My Reverie-themed cards.

And it appears the framework is already in place.

It came after it was reported that Posh had already incorporated a business named H7B – Harper Seven Beckham, her daughter’s full name.

‘Basically, Victoria has been travelling to most places with a film crew,’ said one insider. ‘And Harper had always been with her.

‘It’s time. Harper has this most wonderful British accent which will appeal to the US market.’

Indeed, a trailer for the series, which is being made by husband David’s television production company Studio 99 which also made the three-part, fly-on-the wall documentary, Ronnie O’Sullivan: The Edge of Everything, chronicling the life of the snooker player.

David, I’m told, is delighted at his wife’s show.

The as yet-unтιтled series will focus on Victoria’s time in the global spotlight as well as her business endeavours and family life.

I’m told that Harper’s appearance on her mother’s documentary could very well coincide with her becoming a social media star like her older brothers.

Sources close to the family say that when she turns 14 in July might be the milestone when her parents allow her to have her own account.

The show, likely to be three parts like last year’s award winning Netflix hit, Beckham, which charted his life story, is not Victoria’s first foray into a reality show.

She starred in a show Victoria Beckham: Coming to America back in 2007 when she, David and their three young sons quit their lives in Madrid to move to California when the former England captain signed for LA Galaxy.

Produced by 19 Entertainment and overseen by its boss Simon Fuller who managed both David and Victoria’s careers until they sacked him in 2019, it featured her being mean to her personal ᴀssistant.

Originally planned to be six, half-hour episodes which were due to be screened on US channel NBC weekly in the run up to their arrival, NBC eventually condensed it into a one-off special, although the rest of the show aired on a smaller TV channel.

At the time, Fuller was thrilled to have pulled off the deal, convinced it would make Victoria ‘very famous’ in the States. It was panned by the critics, however, and Victoria sank without trace.

Today, Fuller is nowhere near Posh’s new, sparkly project. Perhaps, unsurprisingly, she isn’t taking any chances with this one being a flop too. She wants to crack America properly – and this time as an acclaimed fashion designer rather than a Spice Girl and WAG.

Her director of choice is filmmaker Nadia Hallgren, who was behind the 2020 four-time Emmy nominated Netflix documentary, Becoming, which gave an intimate insight into the life of former First Lady Michelle Obama. The programme will be overseen by the Beckhams’ much-trusted aide, Nicola Howson, the executive producer of David’s show.

It goes without saying that Harper is the future leader of Beckham 2.0.

And what better platform than Netflix.

‘Victoria has struck gold here,’ said a source close to her. ‘It’s about fashion but really it’s all for Harper, the next generation.

‘Harper has been brought up in the limelight; she does get it, probably more than her brothers.

‘David and Victoria would not have done this had they thought she wouldn’t like it.’

It also appears that there may have been a huge change of heart from David, who since the boys were little, has taken a different view of fame.

Friends of the former England captain say he would have preferred it if his sons had been able ‘to just be kids’, remaining out of the spotlight for longer than he and Victoria were.

He was said to have been unhappy when youngest son, Cruz, signed with Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun to release a pop record back in 2016 when he just 11. If Everyday Was Christmas was released to much fanfare: it charted at number 57.

At the same time Brooklyn, then 17, got a deal with publisher Penguin Random House to release a book of his pH๏τography, How I See It. And Romeo, who was 14 in 2016, had already modelled for Burberry.

One of David’s friends told me: ‘When Cruz launched his pop career, David wasn’t exactly overjoyed. He always wanted his children to enjoy childhood and protect them from fame, something he, of course, knows a lot about.

‘He wants children to be children, he didn’t see why Cruz just couldn’t play his musical instruments in his bedroom. Brooklyn liked taking pictures, so why not just buy him a camera so he can do it for fun?’

Victoria, on the other hand, had other ideas and has in the past been mocked within the Beckhams’ social circle for being a ‘momager’, the term coined for Kris Jenner, the mother of the Kardashian and Jenner sisters who went on make billions.

‘David has been more protective of Harper than any of the boys,’ says the friend.

‘But she is ambitious like her parents and clearly David has decided it’s time to allow her to join the family brand.

‘She’s mature, they think she’s ready and she’s going to be a mᴀssive star, across the globe. Victoria couldn’t be more delighted.’
