Richard Hammond has revealed that his father Alan Hammond has died.

The Grand Tour star, 55, shared the news on a recent episode of his podcast Who We Are Now, which he hosts alongside his daughter Izzy Hammond, where he opened up on feeling ‘tremendous grief’.

The sad news comes just weeks after Richard announced the end of his marriage to wife Mindy after 28 years together. 

In his podcast, the presenter spoke candidly about the loss of his father and how Alan’s pᴀssing had impacted him.

Amid their chat with clinical psychiatrist Dr T, Richard revealed: ‘I have to say quite early on that since we spoke to Professor Green – because that’s this week’s episode, but we recorded it a little while back – since then, we’ve lost my father, Izzy’s grandfather.’

During the grief episode, Richard shared how his loss had affected him, before questioning: ‘And so we are, probably, both of us, Iz, are undergoing change right now – is that changing us?’

Dr T offered his condolences before detailing what the pair were feeling as he spoke about grief, the pain of loss and hw bereavement can alter a person’s brain due to the frustration a death can bring, reports The Express.

Richard then shared: ‘For instance, I’ve noticed that since we lost my dad I don’t wander around daily in a cloud of… there was tremendous grief, of course there was, he was my dad, but it’s kind of in the background.

‘And when it hits me is when I’m pottering about doing something often inconsequential, or thinking about something big, my brain has already formed the thought, “oh, I must tell dad” and I only sort of get…

‘You know when you’re turning a thought into language? So the thought is there, and then I form it into words so I can communicate to myself and to the world, and it gets as far as, “oh I must tell… oh,” and it’s not a big crashing emotion, but it’s a definite sense, it’s a reminder, and that’s the brain doing what you just described.’

Alan worked as a legal executive in North Yorkshire before later becoming an author.

It comes after Richard reportedly ‘tried everything’ to save his marriage for almost 18 months before he eventually accepted that it was over for good with his wife Mindy. 

The former Top Gear star had been desperately trying to save his 28-year marriage until very recently, but the couple publicly announced they were splitting on Thursday.

‘He tried everything,’ a source told The Sun. ‘He hoped they could live separately at the same address under different roofs, but Mindy pushed for a full divorce.

‘For instance, I’ve noticed that since we lost my dad I don’t wander around daily in a cloud of… there was tremendous grief, of course there was, he was my dad, but it’s kind of in the background’

‘He even whisked her away to the South of France to patch things up, but it just didn’t work.’

And while he did everything he could to save it, Richard was made to move into a converted barn in his family home, Bollitree Castle in Herefordshire in August 2023. 

During this time, Mindy confessed that she’s ‘had enough’ and now Richard is living in rented accommodation short commute away which is close to his motor business, The Smallest Cog.

In January, Richard took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to confirm the split after 23 years of marriage.  

It comes after Richard reportedly ‘tried everything’ to save his marriage for almost 18 months before he eventually accepted that it was over for good with his wife Mindy

He penned: ‘A little update from us. This Christmas, we were together as a family and this year we will still be a family, but just structured a bit differently.

‘Our marriage is coming to an end, but we’ve had an amazing 28 years together and two incredible daughters.

‘We will always be in each other’s lives and are proud of the family we created.’
