Jeremy Vine screams in agony as he experiences ‘period pains’ on BBC Radio 2 and admits that he’s got ’empathy’ for women now

Jeremy Vine screamed in agony as he experienced ‘period pains’ for the first time on Friday.

The broadcaster, 59, was hosting his BBC Radio 2 show, where he learned what it would feel like if he were a woman and suffered cramps each month.

Lesley Salem – the founder of training agency Over The Bloody Moon – hooked the TV presenter up to a machine that worked in varying degrees of pain levels.

When the machine was turned up to level four, Jeremy exclaimed: ‘It feels like 84 ants are stuck to my stomach.’

And in a video posted to TikTok, he can he heard moaning: ‘Aaaaaaah! Nnnnngh!’ as Lesley reminds him that it was the equivalent of just  ‘mild cramps’.

By the time the Channel 5 star reached level six, he described it as feeling as if he had suffered food poisoning from a ‘very bad takeaway’.

He said: ‘It’s not damaging at all, is it?’

As Jeremy progressed further through the levels, his pain thresholds weakened and by the time he got to levels nine and ten, he had to stand up.

Failing to get through the script for his own show, he stuttered: ‘I feel like I’m being attacked by a shark!’

In the end, Jeremy asked Lesley if she was about to tone the machine down as he could no longer take it.

She said: ‘I’m going down. I’m giving you a break. You’ve done really well!’

Just before turning it off, Lesley explained that she was trying to gain a sort of ’empathy’ from men towards women because they never experience such pain.

She said: ‘What we’re trying to do for this is for to develop empathy to understand that invisible pain is real pain.’

Jeremy called back: ‘I’ve got a lot of empathy now,!’

The machine worked by ‘sending electrical impulses to the muscles around the abdomen, causing contractions and a dull inner pain that is similar to period pain’.

Level seven is said to represent the ‘average’ sort of pain a woman goes through each month with menstrual cramps, while 10 is closer to someone going through ‘dysmenorrhea or endometriosis’.

Over the Bloody Moon is training agency on andropause, menstrual health and menopause, and they aim to achieve equality within the workplace.

On the official wesbite, experts explained: ‘These sessions can be filmed and used as a follow-up communication campaign to demonstrate commitment by the organisation to support those impacted by PCOS, adenomyosis, or other menstrual health issues.’
