Cyndi Lauper has revealed she got kidney stones when she decided to eat spinach for ‘every meal’.

The pop icon, 71, shed light on her eating habits on an episode of Table Manners With Jessie And Lennie Ware and recalled that her brief experiment with veganism did not go to plan.

She told the podcast: ‘I tried to be vegan. I took one thing where they were just delivering food. Every day [I ate] spinach, every meal, spinach, and I wound up having kidney stones, and they killed me.

‘Yes [you can get kidney stones from spinach], it has a chemical in it. If you eat too much of this kind of thing, and you’re prone to that… You can develop kidney stones. So I stopped that.’

The True Colours singer also gave an insight into her Brooklyn upbringing after her parents separated when she was young.

She said: ‘We were raised by a Sicilian family that came over from Palermo, my grandparents lived upstairs, and my aunt lived next door, which is perfect for them, because that’s how my grandfather kind of wanted everybody together.

‘That’s nice unless they’ve got other dreams, and [then] they’re not allowed to have them. My mother though… she was fantastic. 

‘[The Sicilian family] said “You’ve got to learn how to cook and clean, because you’re going to do it for the rest of your life”. And I thought to myself “Hell no, for you maybe!” 

‘But you know my mom, she knew about the practicality of it. You could take care of yourself, and that’s all I wanted. I wanted to learn how to take care of myself.’

Cyndi also admitted that her husband David Thornton, 71, has attempted to put a stop to her hefty rock collection.

‘I do [bring crystals on tour],’ she said. ‘It’s just grounding. I have other stones that I take. But, my husband thinks you don’t need any more rocks.’

The revelation comes after she broke her silence on last year’s Glastonbury performance which was hit by sound issues and suffered ‘a mᴀss walk out’ of concert-goers.

The Girls Just Want To Have Fun singer suffered horrendous sound problems during her appearance at the iconic festival at Worthy Farm in June 2024.

Festival goers were left struggling to hear her typically jaw-dropping vocals as they complained her voice was drowned out by rumbling bᴀss.

The pop icon’s appearance comes after she broke her silence on last year’s Glastonbury performance (pictured) which was hit by sound issues 

She told the Sunday Times last month: ‘I couldn’t hear the band and that sucked. I wanted to be really great.’

Cyndi revealed that the ordeal had an impact on the timing her upcoming farewell tour as she confessed that she wanted to leave with a ‘big goodbye’.

Cyndi said: ‘I want to say goodbye big, you know? There is an art to standing still and singing, and I do not have that talent.

‘So I don’t know how long I’m going to be able to do the kind of performance that I feel is right.’

After a few songs during her Glastonbury set, Cyndi performed Rocking Chair and she seemed to struggle with her pitch and timing.

The sound issues appeared to have been resolved by the time she got to her hit I Drove All Night.

But Cyndi faltered again on her 1984 track Time After Time as she lagged behind the band – suggesting she was having trouble with her in-ear monitors.

The singer was seen looking at members of the production team by the side of the Pyramid stage as she continued to put on a show for the audience.

The crowd came to the rescue lifting Cyndi up as they sang along to her best known hits, True Colors and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

Despite the issues, Cyndi, who has more than 40 years of stage experience under her belt, was every inch the professional.

The American pop legend began her last ever tour in October, 11 years after her She’s So Unusual: 30th Anniversary Tour.

Cyndi will be in the UK by February 2025, and is set to perform in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, and Belfast.

The tour will then continue onto Budapest, Lodz in Poland, Prague, Berlin, Dusseldorf and Paris.

The hitmaker will be accompanied on tour by a series of special guests, who will be announced closer to the time.
